The ladies of St. Stephen's Ghurch held a monster "Winter IVdr" in King George Hall last Friday; the object being to raise funds for the extension 6£ ehuroh- "work in the district, The effort was most 'successful, this being largely due to the efficient organisation of the President, Mrs Lopdell and of the secretary, Mrs Charters, who, with a band of energetic ladies have worked hard making saleable articles during the past three months.
Apart from the gratifying financial result of some £92, the feeling was expressed, that from a social point of view alone, the effort was well worth while, as many fresh acquaintances were formed among members of the church.
Rev. J. Lopdell introduced the Mayor, Sir.. Alex. Roberts, who performed the opening ceremony in company with the Mayoress, and congratulated his Worship upon his accension to office. After j declaring the Fair open, his Worship | concluded by saying: "It has been my pleasant duty to.open this fair; it is now your duty to open your pockets. ''
