LOWER HUTT COUNCIL

The fortnightly meeting of the Lower Hutt Borough Council was held- on Monday evening. Present Sir Alex. Roberts (Mayor) and Councillors- A. Mcßain, W. G. Meldium, D. S. Patrick, EL R. Boyd, A. E. Carver, F. Campbell,. J. Mitchell, A. Grierson and A. J. Hobbs.

The St. John Ambulance Association thanked the Council for a donation of £5. - ~

The Council gave authority for the sealing of a document regarding the new scale of distribution of heavy

traffic fees.

The By-laws, Fire and Library Committee reported that the Engineer had recommended the following additions to the brick area:—

(a) The whofe of Ward Street and

Wobum road to a point. opposite the southern side of Market street.

(b) All side streets off Main road between the new 'bridge and Brunswick street for a distance of 3 chains, including Brunswick street.

(c) Victoria street and.Cuba street from Cuba "street ramp to the new bridge. -..':;. / |(d) Tama street, 3 chains from Victoria street.

(c) Main road, Brunswick street — Mills street.

(f) Park Avenue and Main road corner, east side from Stellin street to Borough boundary and 3 chains in Park avenue (n.b. a railway station will be constructed on Park avenue).

(g) Heke street —Main road corner anud Heke street similar to (f).

Decision on the question was deferred until next meeting. The Committee also recommended that permission be given for the erection of a hoarding facing Main street between the Central Hotel and the entrance to Riddiford Park, that all the fire appliances were in good order; that it was not in a position at present to make any recommendation in regard to a request from the United Fire Brigades Association for assistance in its demonstration to be held at Lower Hutt at Easter, but that it would report further on the question at the next meeting. The amount required by the Association is £250.

The Committee suggested altering the library hours to from 12 noon continuously to 9 p.m. and that the sum of £50 be spent on new books.

The report was adopted. Crs Mcßain, Grierson and Boyd objecting to the erection of a hoarding. . .

The Works Committee reported as follows on the question of drainage at

Moera:—

Your Committee has to report having received a deputation representing the residents of the Moera district which desired to discuss the question of stormwater drainage with the Committee. During the course of the discussion, several suggestions were made by the deputation and Council's intentions regarding the drainage of the area were explained by the Borough Engineer, and also details of what had been done recently to prevent further flooding.

A report submitted By the Town Clerk in regard to properties owned by the Council was referred back for further details. !

The Engineer reported on a scheme to cost about £70 for making more sightly a section of Borough property facing the Eastern approach of the new bridge. The Council decided instead to accept a tender of £55 per annum for the privilege of erecting hoardings on the section, Crs. Meßain, Grierson, Boyd and the Mayor objecting.

On the requisition of the Health Department it was formally -decided to raise a loan of £16,500 at 5J for sewer-

age works,

On the motion of " Cr. Mitchell the Works Committee was asked to report on tlie question of public conveniences^ at Moera.

The Engineer (Mr A. E. Bush) reported on improvements to the road on Normandale hill which was now in very fair condition. Gracefield road was at present carrying very heavy traffic and would need constant attention—a statement which was endorsed by the. chairman of the Works Committee —Cr. A.
