HUTT v. THISTLE. '

(By ".Goalie.'?)

. The above game was played on the Hutt Recreation ground under iieal weather conditions, although the ground was very.slippery owing to the rainfall earlier in the week. This spoiled many good opportunities for both teams. The Hutt were very unfortunate in not collecting the*' two points for this -game, ! as they were at~ a big disadvantage in fielding twcj new nien, Pake and Dymock, who iwerebotih. playing ?their first game this season,- and owing to unfor-, tunate circumstances, they had to finl a substitute for their regular goal-keeper. This was indeed a big handicap, as Nieolle, their outside right, had to fill the gap between <-lhe' sticks.. He and Batchelor are the'mainstay'of the Hutt •front.; line, yet often they are sadly neglected -by their inside nien. I think this is owing .to players not keeping an eye on the men as well as the ball. WTieri a player gets, t-he ball/lie should know whether it would be»best to pass in-field or to, his wing- men. Player 3 are too ready' with first > time v'kieking, or else trying to beat too many men.. Short passing is the best game for the Hutt team. This was; well illustrated on Saturday's game, both goals, scored by Crundwell, were brought';, Out in this N manner and they were both. low shots. The lonour of scoring thenj. really belonged to the whole' team and if the front line could keep the ball low they will be: a hard team to beat. In the first half Nicolle never got- testedfand. in the second spell he changed places with Howie, who, brought off sonic 'brilliant "saves. Of the new men Dymock impressed most, although McPake with training might improve and would be worth another.trial. Chapman and Gardner played a really good game..' Lbwry at right half is a wanderer^ yet he is a hard worker, what a half back should be, although his keeness migiit cost ,a penalty or two. On three oe-. casioiis he couldn 't. sec the ball go past so he shot his hand- Out and a free kick was the result. McDougall is another good worker, but hie could not put one past his old team mate, Kirkland. CJiapman at left half is also good. Of the forwards the • wing men are the pick, but I .noticed one little fault !*y the Outside left'and that is the coming^ back with the ball towards his own* 'goal; a shrewd opposing back would take full advantage of this. Kirkland, in goal. foT Thistle, 'was a tower of strength, saving what seemed impos-. sible shots. His masterpiece is stopping thigh shots and"fisting out. I believe the Hutt players knew this, but v it didn't look like it. The Thistle backs wiere safe, and the centre half played a good game. The forwards were a very even lot. Gray, and. !Bremmer were the goal scorers for Thistle and Dthese were both scored in the last fifteen minutes, thus making the .score two all. . . ; . ' ' v
