HUTT 15 v^JFNtVERSITY-S
Hutt, owe there victory/to iiie for.wards who stamped the opposition-'tin-ring . the last twenty'minutes. The 'Varsity;Jmclfs were, very.riippy, being much quicker off the mark than the local rearguard. The Hutt inside backs were standing too close, up .when- in an attacking pasition, consequently they were- not able $q -■ gather. up< pace' before- receiving the balK Feoney cut in nicely a couple of times, only to see vhis good work wasted, because no one followed him through; The forwards have, not ..yet got Into the habit; of backing up the, inside backs,, ready to take; an in-pass, otherwise .Feeney's work would probably have resulted in tries. Gordon J3.. habit of running with rae ;ball too much was, responsible for the breakdown of seve^ral movements, because when he ,;did let the ball out, the; other backs were smothered1 immediately. ' If the" half notes that his inside backs are .being muzzled continually, he should vary his play aecprdingly by cutting^ round tie side of the scrum, and handing the ball to his forwards .or using a .shoit punt over- the -opposing- backs?. heads. If this is done" a of .times it will have the effect of making the opposition stand . a bit deeper. The back movements as a whole lacked finish. t • Feeney Was; the only one who consistently ran straight. .Watts had a couple of good ppportunities to score but instead of going rigiit ahead he elected to -:cut, in field . and was smothered, Russell gave , a good display,, but, rarely got a clean pass at the end of a passing rush. Two or three times when Varsity started a passing rush, they had a man to spare 'because . one of the local backs had gone round the blind side v This job should -have been left to the half whose duty it is to w;atch the blind side when" the other side hook the ball, thus leaving the rest of the backs to look after their own particular men. These little points must fo.e, studied and put into effect " for the iharder games ahead. Peck was undoubteily the best f orard on the gi ound, getting throug'fi a tremendous amuunt of work in every direction, his rackhng was good to watch and in this direction alone has very few equals ampngst the forwards in the A .and B epmpetitions. Dowse-tt played a very good part as xo7'.v, and wi^ioiit being an obstriictioa'.st manages 'to v>(>rry . the ottier side coaV. luaily. oesides ; opening up the play for his own side. Tilley scored a couple of very good, tries, both determined efforts. iSundgreen was always in the picture, bob-.-bing up when he was needed most. Roberts and Baker got through a lot of solid work, Hinton met with an accident which will keep, him on the ( bank for three weeks at le^ast. He was missed for >his hooking and fast
following up,
This match against Upper Hutt, will be a hard one, particularly for the forwards and it is to be hope :1 that the strongest team available wiU be picked. Ron. 'W'bpd will be back from vacation and should "be made use of. I£ Sxmdgreen, Baker, Peck, Roberts and Wood are all fit and. i?jrell a gooi side-can, be got together. The task of 'filling Hinton Js.; place will :not be easy: BakeT should' make a good hooker, as -he is the right build.
