DISASTROUS DAY AT WANGANUI.

Warner, who died in hospital after the meeting was all over,- was one of the best known cross-country and hurdle horsemen of recent years. A ; capable and determined rider, he had a fine record of successes to his' credit, including a Grand Naiiouai on. Sturdee. News of vis dea*h, Yvkith became known during the 'evening, gave his friends a shock and universal sympathy and a-egret will be expressed ir. the sporting world at this sad ami abrupt ending co Ms career. Warner Js fall in itself didj not appear .so very- baa, us Gala Day was by himself at the fence, but it was the following horces that seemed to hit him as he lay on the ground.

Puwhero snapped a leg in the Steeplechase.'Thus ended a gallant jumper on the scene of some of his greatest triumphs. It cannot be said that Mr S. R. Hammond is blessed with the best of luck at Wanganui. It is not so very long ago since he lost a promising jumper in Aidath on the same course. Day Guard broke down in the Empire -Handicap and his injuries were sufficient to cause his destruction. Owned and trained in the Auckland province, Day Guard was a useful performer, who, however, had passed his best age. Millais, who broke a leg in- "the concluding event, had only been sold on Thursday by his breeder, Mr F. Ormond ta-Mr Cecil Louisson, and it wajhis second run in his"new colours. Millais was a, winner for Mr Ormond and while his form was mod cra ze he was at an age (three years) when improvement might reasonably be expected.-
