CROQUET.

CROQUET. The Woburn Club concluded its first season on Wednesday afternoon, and great interest was .taken in the first prize-giving. The club has had a niosf successful season, and everything augurs well for its future. From the opening day the lawns have been in constant/demand, and the progress of the beginners, -for whom special trophies were given; is something the club is very: proud of. The competitions for the afternoon were won by Mesdames Young, Walker, Alexander and Tamblyn. At the afternoon interval Mrs Johnson (captain) presented the trophies won during the season, the prize-list being : — Intermediate cham- ■ pionship: Mrs Young; runner-up, Mrs.Juddf ':■'B" chanrpionship: Mrs Monks: Tunnersup", Mesdames Young and ( Roundhill. Beginners' matches: Mrs. Piper; runner-up, Mrs Tamblyn. Opportunity was taken to farewell Mrs:'Fairbairn, a member of the committee, who leaves shortly for England, and in wishing her "bon vOyage", Mrs. Johnson asked her to accept a crystal perfume jar and dainty posy -to remind her of\happy days at "Woburn."

The first of the winter efforts for the club ere held recently, and there was a good attendance: Mr. Johnson, president, welcomed the guests, and later Mr. V. Piper, secretary of, the Social Committee, gave a brief outline of the aim and object of the functions all of which were to assist the club finances aiid also to encourage the sociability

so necessary" to its progress. It was hoped to begin on the new croquet lawns immediately^ and at present members of the bowling, section were giving all their spare time assisting with the weeding of the present greens.
