CROQUET.

Oroquet in Lower Hutt has received quite a fillip this last' week on account of the Ninth Annual Tournament of the Wellington Association being held on the local greens. Competitors and players have been most generous in their praise of the beauty of the gardens and surroundings of the various lawns. The Waimarie, Bjutt, Woburn, and Hautana clubs have all lent their lawns, and the three latter a bowling green, while Mrs Harman's lawn has also been in constant use. Mrs Harman has been very kind to the players on her green, -entertaining them with delicious morning and afternoon tea. There have been a lot of close finishes to the matches, 26 —:24 being quite a frequent score. Mrs. Johnson, the local player of the Wolburn club, has played some great games, one being a record, when she scored the 26 points in less than 20 minutes. On Saturday evening when heavy rain set in the game in progress between Mesdames Johnson and "Walker against Mesdaines Pollock and Andrews, of Eastbourne was only "half through, but nothing daunted, they all elected to carry on, and donning mackintoshes played a good hard - game with as much' attention to • detail as they would have given in brilliant sunshine.

Before play commenced on Saturday morning, Mrs W. S. Austin, President of the Association, called the players together and a motion of sympathy was pased with the family of the late Mrs Lockett, who' passed away early that morning. Mrs Lockett had been an ac-. tive member of the Hutt Club for many years and as a mark of respect the flag on the pavilion was flown-at half mask

Play is proceeding daily and there is every likelihood of some hard battles before finals are reached.
