H.V. HIGH SCHOOL

A special meeting of the High School Board of Governors was held on Tuesday evening. Those present were Mr E. P. Rushworth (chairman), and Messrs Stonehouse, Huthnance, Robertson, Calender, Teagle and the Principal.

Mr Kidson explained that owing to the great increase in the number of scholars attending the school it would be necessary to confirm the tentative appointment made at the last meeting also to appoint three new D. Grade teachers.

The number on the roll at the close of the year was 292 and it now stood at 406. ■

The appointment of Mr R. H. Craig MacKenzie was confirmed.

Mr MacKenzie has had. a brilliant scholaristie and athletic career and is very well-known in He was a prefect at' Wellington College and took his M.A. degree with honours and will teach English, French and Latin. In Rugby he has represented New Zealand against New South Wales ana has represented Wellington cricket. He also represented the Training College in swimming, athletics, boxing and tennis and was sergeant-major in the senior cadets. On the recommendation of the Appointments Committee the following were also appointed assistant D grade teachers: — Miss Jean Thornton Colgan of Auckland. Miss Colgan matriculated in 1921 passed First Section B.A. 1924, Second Section 1925, and final in 1926. Passed degrees in English/Latin French History, Greek, Education and Advanced standard in Latin and French, and sat for M.A. Honours last year.

She took part in all games at the Auckland Girls' Grammar School. Represented 'Varsity in basketball, and swimming at Auckland Trinity College and trained there in physical instruction. She also holds a life-saving certificate.

Mr Edward James Aim of Shannon, matriculated 1922, holds D.C. and B certificates. Took Bachelor of Arts de-. gree 1928, subjects: History, Economies, French, Education and Philosophy. Mr Aim was in charge of cricket at Wanganui High School, coach of school Xl* and coach of school fourth Trade XV. Assisted in swimming and athletics. First Lieutenant school cadets. Miss 'Lilian May Mitchell of Wellington, obtained B.A. 1926 and M.A. 1928 ,subjects: English, French, Econo/nics, Philosophy and Education and has special qualifications in music, elocution and dramatics and took a prominent part in glee clubs. Will teach English;, French1, Hp.story£ Economics and Geography, Physical instruction, Drill and Games. Miss Mitchell was instructress at Point Halswell Borstal Institution for a time and represented Wellington Girls 'College at basketball three years, also played senior B for 'Varsity. The Principal pointed out the possibility of now obtaining a part time Arts' teacher and was .given authority to make application to the Department and it was left with the Appointments Committee to act.

For the position of assistant caretaker and groundsman there were, 80 applicants., six of whom were selected by. the committee to interview the Board. S. Taylor, now of fWellngton, was appointed subject to his taking up his residence in the Hutt which he agreed to do so. Mr Taylor holds a, very high war record having rendered 15 years' service in., the Eoyal Navy, he served in H.M.S. ships "Audacious," "Calgarian," and "Grave," was torpedoed and passed through many adventures. Prior to joining the navy Mr Taylor was a professional gardener and is connected with a prominent family of horticulturists in Christchurch. .
