LOWER HUTT COUNCIL

A meeting of the Lower Hutt Borough Council was held on Monday evening. Present: Mayor (Mr W. T. Strand), Councillors A. J. Hobbs, J. Mitchell, F. Campbell, A.. Carver, E. Waldie, W. G. Meldrum, and Sir A. Roberts.

Leave of absence was granted to Crs, Mcßain and Grierson.

Mr D. A. Ewen wrote acknowledging the Council's letter suggesting, that the new street connecting the eastern end of the new bridge to- Woburn road be named "Ewen Street," and appreciating the courtesy and consideration extended to him, -and suggesting that some suitable Maori name be given to this thoroughfare. It was referred to the By-laws Committee to select a suitable name. The Municipal Association wrote advising that the annual conference of delegates will be held in Wanganui on 6th March next at 9.30, and asking that delegates 'be appointed. The Mayor and Town Clerk were ap:, pointed delegates. The Lower Hutt Athletic and Cycling Club applied for permission to hold an evening meeting on the Ree on Wednesday 30th at 6.30 p.m\, and also on March 2nd.—Granted. Mr G. L. Gibson wrote tendering his resignation from the council's staff as he has been appointed to the post of surveyor to the Federated Malay States. The Mayor stated they regretted losing the services of such an able officer. It was a pity that such young men had to leave the Dominion to better themselves. Cr. Hobbs paid Mr Gibson a high compliment for his valuable services to the Board. The Engineer stated he could only speak in the very highest terms of Mr Gibson's work and credentials. The resignation was received with regret. Mr H. Rostrum wrote tendering his resignation as Assistant Borough Inspector for private reasons. The resignation was accepted with regret. The Mayor reported that Mr Harboard, of the Borough staff, had passed his Preliminary Accountants Examination and he moved that he be congratulated by the Council.. Cr. Meldrum seconded. —Carried. The Baths Custodian reported for the month of December as follows: —Admissions 1134 adults and 2299 children the revenue being £36 4s. The Librarian reported that for the month of December 1619 books had been taken out, 32 new books added, 5 new subscribers, 18 members withdrawn, total number of subscribers 349. The Ranger reported that for the month 12 horses had been impounded.
