HUTT COUNTY ROADS
1 ■■ ~" ■■ WORK IN DECEMBER
The wet and stormy weather experienced during December has had a bad effect on the roads throughout the Hutt County and seriously delayed the carrying out of several works. that were contemplated, states the December report of the Hutt County overseer (Mr. H. Dyer). Tarsealing has been almost impossible with the payment of men by the day, and, if started, would have proved costly, It was very difficult to get any reasonable satisfactory labour, although much was heard of the number of ui-omployed about. The best workers were absorbed at this time of the yeaT by shearing, the meat.works,.etc. ;.,. . , . .:■ ■ , -..-.
On the completed portion of the. Taita Gorge, where the road has been widened toy the Public Works Department, the grader has been kept going at regular .intervals to keep the road in order for the increased traffic before and during "the Christmas holidays. North of Stokes Valley on the main road, the whole sealed length has been attended to for potholes and, where necessary, a fresh coat was applied to. endeavour to keep the surface in good order. The Public Works Department reported that, instructions had been received to continue the widening up to the railway bridge, and arrangements had' been made to fence places where it was most necessary,
Work had been done on the Belmont road for the clearance of small slips, the opening of water tables, etc. As soon' as circumstances permit the grader would be used, and the whole length would be re-conditioned. On Haywards road several sharp corners had been taken off, and the improvement was very noticeable.
The extra men on the Hutt-Waikanae road were doing substantial work in taking off sharp corners and widening the road. Sonic of the metal was suitable for use on the road, and a quanity had been carted and spread where required, with a noticeable improvement in the condition of the surface. The question of taking corners off the. road on the Mungaroa Hill will be dealt with at the first opportunity.
At York Bay the construction of the channelling was delayed by the wet weather. Several times the new work was almost completely washed out.
