R. Y. SHEARER and CO., LTD.
Shop Burgled and Set on Fire.
The premises of Messrs R. T. Shearer and Co., Ltd., in Main Street, were broken into and, set on fire last Friday morning. It was a great piece of good fortune that the fire was discovered by a passenger in a service car which passed through the town at 3.30 a.m.
. The Fire Brigade^ was notified and was very. promptly in attendance and soon had the fire under control. An investigation showed that the thieves had gained entrance by breaking a small window over one of the bay windows in the mercery department and their attentions were chiefly limited to that branch of the business. After taking a large amount of booty, there is ample evidence that the miscreants were bent on destruction, for not only was the counter, under which was stored a quantity of paper, burned to' ashes, bmt fires were evidently started in the shelves. It is not yet possible to estimate the loss which must be very considerable.
The salvage stock will be offered for sale starting" on Thursday morning. Full particulars will be found among the advertisements.
