The Hutt News THURSDAY, JANUARY 17, 1929. LOCAL AND GENERAL.

Arrangements are well in hand for the Garden Party and Monster Social gathering in connection with St. James's. Church to be held at "Woburn" the residence of V. Riddiford Esq. Given fine weather this will provide a delightful Saturday afternoon's outing among the charming surroundings of this beautiful home. Games of all sorts will be 1 provided besides afternoon tea and stalls for sale of cakes, produce, etc. In our advertising columns there will be found full particulars of the improved bus service to Hutt from Wellington, in addition to a new service which links up the industrial area including the new Railway Workshops. Also Sunday Service to Akatarawa. •■ '.' . •

The residents of Taita, are reminded of the social to be held in Taita Hall on January 30th, in connection with the Anglican Church. A good prograjnme lias been arranged including musical items, games and dances. It is- hoped, that all the church supporters and their friends will- join to make 'this- social gathering a success. Mr. R.~G. House will act as M.C. Don't lost the opportunity to have a jolly evening;'

An announcement appears in another column drawing attention to the early opening of several Produce Auction Rooms which should prove of value to those growers who desire to deliver their produce at the markets in time to allow of them returning to their gardens at the usual starting time.

Several business people in the Main Street and particularly those near Queens Eoad have been visited by a new brand of thief who makes a hobby of collecting electric light globes from verandahs.

Will any friends who can give away left off clothing kindly send their address to Captain B. Stone, c/o Salvation Army who will call and be glad to pass it on to deserving families in the district. The demand is great.

The action of burglars and incendaries in setting fire to Messrs Shearer's premises in the Main Street during the early hours of last Saturday morning, brings before us very forcibly the urgent necessity of providing some form pf night police patrol to protect the property of our business people. Far too frequently of late thieves have forced their way into Hutt shops and wrought considerable, damage, apart from the booty which they obtained. So far no trace of this nefarious gang has been found, but it is considered highly probabfe that it is the same gang which a few months .ago was responsible for burning down th& Taita Store. The matter has now become so 'serious that unless the Police Department can supply the necessary night protection action will have to be taken by the business people themselves. It has been suggested that the Business Men's Association (which we understand will shortly adopt the more impressive title of "Chamber of Commerce") should take this matter up. The maUar is too serious to permit of any further delay and the authorities shoxud not los 3 sight of the fact that whilst the population of the district shows such a phenomenal increase it is only reasonable* to expect that the police supervision, should be increased accordingly.
