HUTT VALLEY HIGH SCHOOL
The monthly meeting of the Board of Governors of the Hutt Valley High School was held last Friday evening. There were present Mr. E. P. Rishworth in the chair, Messrs Callender, London, Huthnance, Grim/wood. Stonehouse, Teagle and the secretary, Mr. Kidson.
The chairman made feeling -reference to the loss the Board had sustained by the death of the late Mr. Hy. Baldwin, a vote of condolence with the relatives being passed, the Board mein'bers standing. The chairman intimated that the relatives of the deceased, realizing the great interest he had taken in the develcvpinent of the school, intended to make a very handsome dona-' tidn to the school funds. It was hoped that this would form .the nucleus of the fund for building an assembly hall for the school which would act as a fitting memorial to him ,' A vote of thanks to Mr. J. Camp-bell and Mr. F. G. A. Marehant for gifts of books to the school library and .a donation to the school funds respectively, was carried. It was decided to inform the Borough Council of the vacancy caused by the death of their representative on the Board. The Director of Education intimated that owing to being1 out of town he would be unable to deliver an address at the brcaking-up ceremony. It was decided to ask Dr. E. Mnrsden, head of the Department of Scientific Research, to attend the function. t
Mr. Teagle was appointed temporally to the position of treasurer to the Board, and Mr tStonehou.se temporally to the grounds committee.
The Board congratulated the school on their recent success in procuring second place in the inter-sceondary schools athletic tournament and the girls on being runners up in the secondary schools tennis tournament.
The question of insurances of the Board and staff against claims for compensation in case of injury to the scholars "was again discussed. Quotations for cover were received from the State Fire Insurance Co. It was decided to ascertain from the office what the exact extent of that cover was.
Mention was made of the astounding ruling given in the. North Xo the effect that teachers were responsible for pupils from the time they left home until their return.
