PETONE-HUTT GAS BOARD
The monthly meeting of the Petone and Lower Hutt Gas Lighting Board was held on Tuesday evening. Present: Mr W. G. Lodder (chairman), and Messrs C. P. Brockelbank, E. Hogg and Jacobson. The Auditor-General returned the balance-sheets for the two years ended 31st March, 1928 and the chairman remarked that they reflected great credit on the office staff. The Chief Gas Examiner inquired if the board had yet come to a decision in regard to its future supply as the testing of Petone gas could not be indefinitely postponed. It was decided to reply that the board was still engaged in gathering information. The necessary resolution was passed to bring into force the National Provident Fund scheme of superannuation. By Products, Ltd., advised that it was daily expecting a cable from London, which would enable it to reply to j the board's enquiry as to when it would be in a position to offer the board a supply of gas. The board made a contribution of £3 3s to the fund of the Petone Fire Brigade in appreciation of its recent service to the board. The tenders of Messrs Packard and Boyd for the foundation of a new gas holder and Mr F. G. Bryant for a gov-ernor-house at Fry's lane were accepted. Mr C. P. Brockelbank was granted leave of absence for the next two meetings of the board. The gas manager's report for September showed that 8,313,000 cubic feet .of gas were manufactured from 540 tons of coal carbonised, giving an average calorific value of 499 B.Th.TJ. The increased manufacture over that of September, 1927, was 788,500 cubic feet. Coal and tar in stock on Ist October amounted to 989 tons 5 cwt 3 qrs and 14,800 gallons' respectively; and 107 tons 18 cwt 3qrs of coke and 4610 gallons of tar were sold during the month. In the same period, 71 chains 14 feet of mains were laid, and 39 new services, 37 cookers, 8 coppers, 2 caliphonts, 5 hotplates and 7 gas fires were installed. *
