How to Make a Concrete Roller
A garden roller can be made very simply from a length of drain pipe filled with concrete and fitted with a suitable iron handle (Fig. 1.)
The pipe forming the roller can be of 10-in., 12-in., 15-in., or other suitable size of fireclay pipe in 3ft. length and a pipe with, a damaged faucet can usually be obtained at a very reasonable price.
' The width of the roller can be of any size between 24-in., and 30-in., the faucet end of the pipe being carefully chipped off with a hammer and chisel and laid aside for garden use as a flower pot. A piece of iron tubing or rod, J-in. or 1-in. diameter and about 3-in. longer than the length of the rollei-, should next be inserted in the pipe and carefully centred, with the pipe standing vertically on flat boarding, into a hole in which the pipe projects downwards* IA-in. (Fig. 2).
Concrete of a suitable mix is then pouTecfc in and allowed to set, care being taken to see that the tubing or rod is keptcentral in the pipe.
When set, the roller can be brought into a horizontal position, and an iron frame handle, similar to that illustrated*fitted on and retained with washers and split pins through the tubing.
If desired, the pipe can be divided into two parts which can be filled separately with concrete and threaded on to the tubing being kept apart with, iron washers, This type of roller will be found easier to control and turn.
