FANCY DRESS DANCE.

The Scout Headquarters in Strand Park was the scene of a most gay and festive gathering on Saturday evening last, when the long expected Fancy Dress Dance took place. For a long time previous to the' occasion, scouts and helpers were, busy with preparations, streamers and coloured lights, greenery and flags were utilised with skill and judgment, turning the Main. Hall into a place of beauty. The ceiling was formed of coloured streamers interspersed with coloured lights, while the walls were hidden in greenery. The floor had been carefully prepared, and it was generally considered that it was equal to any in the district. The music rendered by the orchestra under the able leadership of Mr. Peck, was much appreciated, The proceedings opened with the Grand March, in which the many attractive costumes showed to great advantage. The judges were Mrs. S. H. Hoggard, who received a beautiful bouquet of violet from Miss Cavaye, and Mr. L. Meredith. They found; great difficulty in allotting the prizes owing to the varied and beautiful nature of the dresses,, for it was evident that the guests had given much time and ingenuity to their costumes, Their final decision was as follows: —Best Fancy Dresses: Mrs. "Westbury as a Harem Princess and Mr. Firmiston as a cowboy. Most Original Costumes: Mrs. Anderson as " Ruination; ' and Mr.Westbury as "Miehelin Tyres." The prizes in connection with the card evening held at the same time, went to Mrs. Simpson and Mr. Pearse. The special prize was awarded to Miss Back. Special prizes for costumes were given also to little Miss Cavaye and Miss Wakelin, who were certainly the daintiest little ladies ever seen. In addition to those already mentioned, the following were noticed:—Mrs. Skipage, "Egyptian"} Mrs. Mair, "Old English?'; Mrs Futter, "Early Victorian"; Miss Buck, "Pierette"; Mrs. Cox, "Maori"; Mrs Vallely, "Spanish Dancer"; Mrs. Murray "Arabian"; Miss Cavaye, "Fairy"; Mrs. Cavaye, "Night"; Miss Wakelin, ' ' Columbine; Miss Norris, '' Gentleman"; Mrs. Pearce, "500"; Miss McKay, "Moorish Maid"; Miss Taylor, "Query"; the Misses Fleet, "Pearl, Maiden and Folly"; Miss Samuels, "Weldon's Fashions"; Mr. Mair, "Pirate"; Mr. F. Kershaw, "Courtier"; Mr. MeMahon, '' Toreador "; and many others, Mr. J". Kershaw as ' * Abdullah' * carried out the duties of M,C, in hig usual graceful and efficient manner.
