HORTICULTURE.
Notes on the Wanganui, and New Zealand National Daffodil Society's Spring Show, held at Wanganui on September 13, and 14. (By. C. E, Buckingham). The exhibits in the National Classes were the feature of the Show, as they were last year when held at the Hutt. The leading growers from all over the North Island were present, and also prominent growers as visitors from the far South. Among the successful raisers of new varieties, who had many fine new creations at the Show, were C. Goodson, Hawera; Robert Gibson, Manaia; Alan Gibson, Marton; — Park, Te Arohaj Brewster, JTeilding. Other well known, growers present were Sir. R. Heaton Rhodes, Messrs A. G. Bull, A. E. Grinrod, W. E. C. George, H. Poole, A. W. Broadway, H. Small,. W. H. Reynolds, N. C. Barstow, A.'Chrystal, W. Slater, J. G. Weightman, Rev. W. Avery and many others, who unfortunately, I did not have the pleasure of knowing The Hutt Society was well represented and I would like to congratulate Mr. Alex Thompson, quite a young grower, who was successful in winning the valuable McKinnon Cup outright, having won it two years in succession. I would also congratulate Mr. W. Slater, also from the Hutt, in again winning the North Island Amateur Championship. This^is the third consecutive win in this class to Mr. Slater and he has been well rewarded for his painstaking method of cultivation. Speaking of the quality of the blooms, there were jiany that appealed to me as flowers that will hold their place on the show table for some years to come as high class. I append a list of those which I thought were the best: — Yellow Trumpet. —"Renown," "Golden City", "Lord Roberts." White Trumpet.—" Kantara," "Beersheba," "Mrs Kreleage." Red Cups. —"Wellington," "Flash- ! lightning," "Fortune," "Scarlet Pimpernal," " Orange Glow," " Alanton.'' Yellow Incomparabilis. — '' Yellow Poppy," "Pilgrimage," "Golden.Pedestal, '' ''Peggie," "Carlton.'' Leedsii—' * Tenedos," " Basilia " " Egmont Queen." Barriis. —A fine bloom of "Mozart." Owing to the lateness of the season there were very few Barriis and Poeticus shown. After seeing all the very fine new varieties on exhibition I think that if I had my pick of the best three varieties in the show I would choose "Wellington" first, "Fortune" second, and "Flashlightning" third, but as two of these are as yet unprocurable, seeing them is my share just now.
One has to see these three varieties to understand the wonderful improvement that has taken place during the last few years in the Red Cup varieties and the possibilities are practically unlimited with this class of flower, in the hands of our well known seedling raisers. The Wanganui people were indeed fortunate in aaving the opportunity of seeing so many and varied high class blooms.
