CONCERT.
Mr. Claude H. Haydon's Compositions Concert will be held in St. James's Hall, on Wednesday, August 15th.
Some of our residents, doubtless will remember that on. June 25th. last a programme, made up almost entirely of Mr. Claude M. Hay don's _works, was heard (broadcasted from the Wellington "Wireless Station). Also, previous to this (at the invitation of the Society of Musicians, Wellington), Mr Hay don presented a short programme of. his works, arid we are pleased to report that on both occasions the items rendered were much enjoyed by appreciative listeners. Mr. Haydon has just completed arrangements for the performance, of items taken from the two above-mentioned programmes; also at his forthcoming concert on Wednesday, August 15th, will be heard two compositions quite new to Hutt residents — two movements for a String Quartette and a soprano song^with violin obligato. This interesting item, written as recently as July Ist, 1928, will be figuring on our Wellington Competitions' programme this year, UDder the heading of "Combined Effort." Mr. Haydon has been fortunate in. securing for its performance at this concert, the services of the same artists as will be collaborating in it at the Competitions, namely, Miss Ailsa Nicol (soprano)— who, by the way, won a Christcnurcn Championship medal at this year's competitions—Mrs. O'Kane (piano), and Mjsa Grace Monks (obligato . "violin). Miss Monks has also kindly consented to add variety to the programme by performing Svendsen's "Romance" in Gr Major. Another player adding variety to the programme is our talented young" Lower Hutt 'resident, Miss Zell O'Ka.ne, L.A.B. wtio appears as solo pianiste in Rachmaninoff's * Waltz' in A Major. We feel sure that Hutt residents will also greet most cordially the "Ariel Singers" (of Wellington 2YA Broadcasting fame), and the members of the Tomßs String Quartette also of Wellington. All the artists, whoie-heartedly collaborating with Mr. Haydon, ensure the success. and enjoyment of the programme to be submitted.
A special interest attaches to Mr. Haydon's String Quartette. This work was successfully performed in Vienna on May 27th, 1927. We realise that, in the matter of eomposton, selfcriticism is not easy. Nor is a composer's estimate of his own work necessarily of any value at all. Still, it may interest some of our readers to know that Mr. Haydbn considers that this quartette contains much of Ms maturest and most representative work.
During the evening ,Mr. Haydon will play some of his own new piano solos, which, as above stated, found favour at a reeent meeting of thie Society of Musicians, and none of which, as yet, have been, publicly heard here.
At this concert, admission to an^ part of the hall is to be by ticket; price 2/-. N"o reserved seats.
