The- committee of the Association Football Club desires to heartily thank all those who so generously contributed goods to the club's recent bazaar; also those who kindly sent donations in money. To look at the gardens round about Petone and Lower Hutt one is inclined to agree with the observers for' bulbs are springing up every where and will soon be in bloom. Mr. Jas. Stonehouse has been reelected as the local representative on the Education-Board, the voting being 37 against 23 for Mr. Carey. Mr. Stonehouse has worked energetically "in the interests of education for many years, and has rendered valuable ser-. vice during his term of office, on the Board. Does this interest you? In connection with the Methodist Church a social hour will be held in Wesley Hall on Sunday next after the evening service. There will.be solos,, community singing of favourite hymns, and supper, with opportunity for social intercourse. The proposal is to cultivate the social relationships among the I members and adherents of the Church, and in particular to help recent arrivals to feel at home in the congregation. Newcomers are specially invited to be present. Housewives appreciate the sterling values offered where they adopt the cash-over-the-counter method of purchasing. The Pretoria Cash Grocery . and adjacent shops, corner of Petoria Street and. Main Road, erected by Mr. Hermanns^ are attracting large numbers of Hutt residents who are mak- j ing it their business to support and make this block of shops their shopping centre. Purchase the machine which proves its claims I Miss Avis Elliott, who has resigned from the clerical staff of the Borough Council was the recipient of a gold bangle as a momento of her association with the Borough Council staff, last Saturday morning. The Town Clerk, Mr. B. S. Knox, in making the presentation, expressed the regret all felt at the loss of so capable an officer and wished Miss Elliott every success in her new sphere of operations. A band of Hutt Valley enthusiasts is preparing to hold a meeting in Patone early next week for the purpose of reforming the local boxing association. Some time ago a meeting was held, when a new committee was elected to further the game in the Valley, but so far nothing has been done. Charlie Purdy informed the writer this morning that he was prepared to give the Valley his assistance. Pat Connors also promised support. In reference to the historical holly tree planted on the Moera Estate, Lower Hutt, to commemorate the holding of the first meeting to consider the eight-hour day in New Zealand in the late 'forties, the Mayor of Lower Hutt (Mr W. T. Strand) said the tree stood on the property of the Hutt River Board which had been caring for it. The tree was still growing vigorously, i although it had been cut back. Five years ago the River Board gave iri^ structions that the tree was to be pror tected. He had mentioned the matter again, and he believed that something further would be done in the way of placing a notice board near to it to .show what it was and the reason for which it was planted.
