LADIES' HOCKEY CLUB
EEutt Senior A v. Training College,
This game was played on Hutt No. 1, which'is easily the best ground in the Association and certainly on Saturday being specially cut and rolled was like '' glass,'' the ball travelling well and truly and players being able to display their proper form which cannot' be done on most of the grounds and right here is a hint to the Wellington Association for goodness sake get on.cc in a while, something really done to level the ruts, holes and hillocks of even Karori No 1, let alone the others. Hutt A started off merrily and dashed straight up from the bully off, a little scramble saw a simple one find its may to the net. Shortly after T. McDowell, now striking her form, went up the left wing and with her deft pull t>ack stroke evaded the opposition, sent in a hot one beating the goalie, who, by the way, did commendably well during the game. Hutt continued the heavy pressure, Training College not showing their good form of last week or were over-shadow-ed by the better team. The Hutt full backs were very sure, and were ably supported by the halves who fed the forwards judiciously. More feeding of tke right wing would improve matters. Training College put in. many determined challenges but had very few scoring possibiliteis. -In the second spell Hutt scored another goal, making the total result 6 —o. Goals were scored by T. McDowell 2, M. Fraser 3, B. Taylor 1.
Mr. W. A. Scctt controlled the game admirably.
The Training College. team is a good active one of real grafters to whom a little more experience will give the added finish and "bring scores. Miss Lovegrove, centre forward, and Miss Bankin, right full hack, in their positions showed to advantage, whilst the other members played consistently.
For Hutt, Miss V. Fraser, in goal, was not called on except one occasion and she cleared with good judgment. Mrs Smith and Mrs Woods at full back are as reliable a pair as there is in Wellington, being resourceful,' tricky and clean hitters with good direction. The halves. Mrs Corliss (right), Mrs Hendle (centre) and Miss Jean MeDowall, are a good trio. Mrs Colliss' experience of her position and good support of full backs in dangerous moments and forwards when attacking being always good. She is now at her best form v Mrs, Hendle only recently took the position of centre half and is adapting herself to it like a duck to water and improving in the position every game. Her pace helps particularly. Jean McDowell is improving in her supporting the full baeks~when opposing rush is getting dangerous, a vital necessity. Her Jutting power and support of
the wing is distinctly good
Of the forwards nothing much need be said of Tarn McDowell as she is now about to her best form and as such is a pattern for all hockeyists, men as well as women left wingers—no rush and tear, but clever stick work and a heady player. Miss M. Fraser (inside left) is playing better than ever and now that she has a good winger is not hampered in her own work. A good goal getter. Mrs Sundgreen (centre forward) the "wee dot 7^ of the team, is the most consistent player in the Association in every game giving a sterling performance, is always as fit at the end of every game as at the start, and one of the few players whose unselfishness is a feature. Her short passes and stick work is a pattern to all players. Very
rarely is she beaten at a "bully." A good hustler in the circle. Mr& B. Taylor has been one of Hutt's full backs for years but due to necessary changes is now playing inside right and doing well, in fact, on a couple of occasions she should have gone for the shot instead of being unselfish" and passing. O. Buttenmore (right wing) is a speedy player with a good centreing stroke who rarely 'gives "sticks," a really good feature as nothing is so bad after going up the wing and the rest of forwards in position for a rignt wing to penalise the side at the moment of a golden opportunity.
The position of the teams looks as if it is certain that Hutt A and Swifts will have to play off for the championship.
The local hockey girls are making desperate efforts to fill the lockers of the Association with hard cash to enable the Wellington representative teani to get a chance of, being represented at the Dominion Tournament at Timaru at the end of next month. As the Association funds are very low and the" Wellington Association team is in the opinion of good judges one of the very best in the Donr'Jrion at the present time, it would be a pity if they could not get to Timaru. Enthusiasts, especially those connected directly with hockey, and others who may feel inclined to see Wellington at. top of the ladder, are asked to come forward with monetary aid in any amount they feel disposed to help with. Mr E. V. King, one of the selectors, will be pleased to receive any kindly aid in this
direction,
1' Recently a friend of mine tried to interest 'me in a bitter political discussion, '' writes Sir Harry Lauder, in the Yorkshire Observer. '' I said to him, '' Mon, ma job is tae amuse folks, not tae set them at yfn anither's throats. Whit ye should dae, if ye want popular favour, is tae start a new party altigither, which didna bother sac much aboot beating the ither parties as it did tae set them I laughin' an' makin' them friends. Let it be each Member's duty tae mak' another mon simile each day; have everybody in it, and ea' it the Happy Party—yell find, in a year or two, that its numbers are sac great an' its majority sac great that its doctrines have spread all over the world." And, though it sounds an idealist dreana, there's a germ of sense in it for a' that!"
