BREAKING IN A CAB It is well known that a new car should be driven slowiy for the first SUO miles and when this is inconvenient the breaking-in of a new vehicle can be achieved by jacking up the rear wheels and allowing the engine to run for an equivalent period of time. Breaking-in on the jack has certain advantages over breaking in the working surfaces of the different units from the strain of operating under heavy loads until they have been run in. Another big advantage is that the car or truck is ready to pull at nearly its full capacity after it has been so run in on the jacks. Naturally this saves considerable time for one who uses trucks. One dealer breaks-in trucks for his customers in this way; the reason is that this particular user is so hard on his trucks that he will not give them the proper breaking-in prior to delivery!. The average truck driver does not even pretend to be a mechanic, so another great advantage of breaking trucks in on the jacks is that the truck is under the observation of capable service men, who can watch the lubrication and be careful to see that the engine does not overheat. DIESEL ENGINE LORRIES The Mercedes-Benz factory, Germany is now turning out lorries fitted with the Diesel engine. It is interesting to note that while operating economy is the most important advantage of the Diesel engined lorry, in some countries this type of engine is being called for because of its greater safety from fire risks compared with the normal petrol engine. Germany undoubtedly has made greater progress in theapplication of Diesel engines to road vehicles than any other nation, and thpro is every reason to believe that within a few years the heavy oil engine will be fc-ery extensively used on omnibuses and trucks. A wonderful change has taken place in Germany during the last three or four years in the application of omnibuses and coaches. The vehicles are all of modern design and their use has grown in amazing proportions. Generally speakig Germany -is much more ad- j vaneed in commercial motor transporta- j tion than in private cars. In France the post-war revival showed itself in popular private cars; in German it came with commercials, and it may be two or three years yet before the private car begins to grow at a rapid rate. EXHAUST GAS PETROL "Under any circumstances the. discharge of an automobile exhaust into a roofed enclosure should*be regarded as a hazardous act. The greatest danger to life is unquestionably in the small private garage containing one or two cars." This is the statement made by the United States Public Health Service in a nation wide analysis of carbon monoxide peril. Keeping the doors, open while working in the garage when the motor vehicle is running will prove an excellent rule at all times. Remember that a little care may prevent fatal termination to well-meant efforts.
