SCOUT CONCERT

It was unfortunate that the weather was unkind for the Scout Concert last Monday evening; The Petone Benefit Entertainers were in their happiest mood and presented a x^rogramme of varied and interesting numbers. This excellent company is to be highly commended .for its .originality and .talent. The orchestra is tuneful, and plays the popular music of the day with skill and dash. The musical part of the programme was well sustained by the company, and particular praise is due to the male chorus which is one of the best we have heard in connection with.

local amateur work. Unfortunately the female .voices were rather lost in so large a hall, the fault not being .due to t"he ladies, whose voices •arc very sweet, though not powerful.

Little Ismay Mcllroy charmed the. audience with two recitations, her most striking item being "The House That Jack Built." The editor of the "Hutt News'/ was seen in his "office" interviewing -a prospective candidate for the position of poet Laureate. Much, of the dignity that doth hedge a king appeared to be •absent from this particular editoT. The ;ensemble " Street Cries" was well done, as was the ventriloquil act which was marked by wonderful originality. Probably the prettiest item of a colourful programme was the "Gavotte '' by the Company, but we should like to see a stricter adherance to period. Certainly the most attractive portion of the evening's entertainment was that, provided by Miss K. Boyle and Mr Les. Bradley in their novelty dance, a display equal to any given by professional dancers. Altogether the programme was admirably balanced, and it is only to be regretted that the weather prevented a larger attendance.
