A PLUCKY ACTION

PETONE BOY JTHVCPS OFF WHABF . .TO RESCUE A CHILD. A very heroic action was made by William Tegg, of Fitzherbert sereet, Petone, (who is only 18 years old), last ■Wednesday morning vrhen he rescued a little boy named Linton, of Victoria Street from drowning. Linton and another small boy were playing on the wharf when suddenly Linton fell into the sea. Mr Tegg who was on the wharf at the time, jumped into the icy water, fully clad, and (was endeavouring to get a grip of the steps when Mr Charlie Gardiner, of Elizabeth Street came upon the scene, being attracted there by the cries for help from the other boy who was trying to unravel the rope of the lifebuoy which was fastened nearby. He saw Tegg in the water trying to get a grip of the steps. He tried to grab Tegg but was told to take the child, and, greatly astonished, he saw the little boy -who was just below the surface, tucked under'Tegg's arm. He grabbed the boy and then assisted Tegg.

In conversation with a '' Hutt News' ' reporter, Mr Gardiner said he considered that.. Tegg's action was one of the pluckiest he. had ever seen. The water, was bitterly cold and had it not been for the bra.ye action of Mr Tegg, ,a fatal drowning fatality may have oceured.
