BOYS' HOME

The General Meeting of the Anglican Boys' Home Scouts' Committee was held in St. James's Schoolroom, on May 9th. Rev. Blackburn was in the chair in the absence of the President, Yen. Archdeacon Hansell. Aiming those present were Mr Meredith who was a Commissioner at Home; representatives from the Petone and Hatt Troops; Mr and Mrs Haseltine; Mr Nelson, District Scout Master who has charge of the Scouts, and his assistants; the Akela, Mrs Hoggard; Mr and Mrs House, Mrs Rogers, Mrs Darnell and others. .Several apologies were received. The report for the year showed that the idea of having a Troop of Scouts at the Home had been a great success. It had found a prompt supporter in Rev. Fielden Taylor who had presented the Matron with a ring which was sold for £5, and the opening was hold on March 26th, 1927. Sir Alfred Robin was present and addressed the boys. Funds were raised and the Scouts wore provided with uniforms and equipment. Altogether over £30 had been spent for uniforms alone. Donations ■ were received from the Bulls Cabs , and two afternoons were given by Mt» , Turner of Wellington. These funds with donations from the Vice Presidents were augmented later by the proceeds of a concert given by the Petone Benefit Entertainers and the end of the year showed a balance at the bank .of over £14. Votes of thanks were passed to Mr H. Brown of Petone who had presented the troop with a flag and a Totem Pole; to the Church Trustees for the use of the Schoolroom for meetings of the Committee; and to the Scoutmaster and the Akola for their untiring and sue- ' cessful work* and to the Matron, Mrs Haseltine. Re,v. Archdeacon Hansell was reelected President, and the Committee: Mr and Mrs House, Mrs Meek, Mr and Mrs Haseltine Mrs Harnoll. Mr and Mrs Rogers, Mr Meredith, Mr W. Adams, Hon. Scf;. and Treasurer. Mr J. D. Hall was appointed Auditor. The meeting was gratified to hear from the Scoutmaster and the Akela a satisfactory report of the year's wor3t. Mr Meredith spoke in glowing terms , of Mrs Hoggard's work. Mrs Haseltine , was emphatic in her belief that the | Scouts had been a success from her point of view and had been of greatest value to the boys. In a letter to Mr Carver, who was then Secretary, Mr Nelson, who had •taken the' Scouts in to the Scout rally on June 3rd, says, "His. Excellency the Governor-General had some flattering remarks to say about the appearance - and conduct of the Troop." This is a valuable tribute to a three months' old troop and to their leaders. tl is hoped that the same generous support will be given to the troop in the forthcoming year as was given in the past.
