We understand that the Hutt County Council has made application to the P. and T. Department to have a public telephone' installed at Taita. This district is being settled very rapidly, and it is to be hoped that the Department can see its way to cater for the growing demands. All legal formalities have been carried out for the extension of the water service in the neighbourhood of Nai Nai Lane, Back Waiwhetu Road and Porutu St. This district will thus be provided with a thoroughly efficient water service. The ratepayers are to be called upon at an early date to record their votes at a poll taken to sanction this progressive move. The 76th Anniversary of Knox Presbyterian Church will be celebrated on Sunday next, 27th May. THe preacner at the morning service will be Rev. R. J. Howie, B.A. of St. Andrews, Wellington and the evening service will be conducted by Rev. James McCaw. An augmented choir will lead the praise service. The first Minister of the charge after separation from St. Andrews was Rev. Win. Dron. He was ordained in May 1858. The Rev. John Thorn succeeded hhn. Then followed Revs. W. S. McGowau. George Grant. William Grant, R. Foil. . D. Rodger.. John Hope, M.A., A. Gray, E. Eldridge, Wm. Marshall. The earlier pastorates, some of them, were brief, but the present Minister is about to enter upon the 20th year of his ministry. The - Sunday services on May 27th will be followed by a sacred concert, organ recital, and short service of re-dedication of a fine pipe organ which has just been thoroughly overhauled. This will bo held on Thursday evening, 31st May at 8 o'clock proceeds being to defray cost of organ overhaul.
Wo understand ithat the Borough. Council Committee which waited on the Commissioner of "Police regarding the police requirements of the district had a most satisfactory interview. Mr Edward Hutt, who has been appointed Borough Landscape Gardener, has had a life long experience in his profession both in England and in thiscountry. Mr Hutt has a distinguished war career, having served with the Argyle and Sutherland Highlanders. He was badly wounded and was recommended for a commission in the field. At the recent Manawatu CompetitionsMiss June Wilson and Miss DuleieMason secured first prize for the Piano- )9 forte duet under 32 years of age. MissJune Wilson also obtained Jirst prize for the Pianoforte Solo for under .12 years, of age. Both are pupils of the Sacred. Heart Gollege, Lower Hutt. The latest form of vandalism discovered in the Hutt is that of strewing; quantities of dock seed on newly-laid lawns. Several neighbours in tho vicinity of Penrose Street were priding themselves upon the- excellent appearance of their new lawns as a result of the favourable season. Imagine their horror when they came out one -morning' to find quantities of dock seed strew» around. The people concerned have a. shrewd idea who the culprit is and have placed the matter in the hands of the police. It is to be hoped the culprits will receive their deserts. | It is the general opinion of the Hutt public that government control of buso»is NOT a success. When the buses were controlled by private enterprise the local authority insisted that an adequate and xegular time table should be naaintained. Apparently that authority has gone, with the result that those travelling to work are left in a stateof glorious uncertainty. On several occasions lately the bus, timed to pass down Hautana St. about 8.10, may now arrive at any time between 8.5 and 8.30. This is a serious matter, particularly for those employed in offices, etc. r , where discipline is strict. Possibly thereis an opening here for some enterprising taxi service; for trade without competition has a habit of languishing. Messrs Matthews and Hoggard, land,, estate and insurance agents, 23 MainStreet, are now well established in theirnew premises. This firm has a most attractive display of properties in, their" windows and j)ersons desirous of purchasing a home will find a splendid ra.nge to select from. Judging from the number of properties passing through their hands it would appear that Messrs Matthews and Hoggard are securing alarge portion of the land agency business of the Hutt Valley. As local agents for the Atlas Fire Assurance Company,. Ltd. they are prepared to do business in all classes of fire, accident, plateglass, builders risk, and motor ear insurance. The land agency business isnow well represented in the Hutt Valley, but those wishing to purchase or* dispose of properties should make a. j personal call on this firm, or ring them j on 'phone Xo. 397. i "The life of man is summed up in'birthdays and in sepulchres"; but the[life of a motor car is summed up ire j care and use—not in age. This is illusj trated at Valley and Bay Motors... Lower Hutt just now, where a few minutes can be well spent inspecting theiradmittedly. "out of date stock" of used ears. These can nevertheless still "shake a leg"—or a bonnet —with the best. Though the once graceful lines and chic touches, have in some cases become (like the "beau-catcher" oit< the brow of the flapper of summer? gone, a little pathetic in the mar ami. j jaT of life, there remains (despite many honourable scars) fair features and J buxom utility, with a special appeal to | those of economical and practical turn jof mind. This is enhanced foy the luck: lof a "sealed bid" now offering to thc-ifl^ sensible and speculative buyer. Par- ; ticulars are advertised in another column. About 50 n>en are engaged on the work of erecting the steel towers which are to-carry the power lines south from Waika remioa-na to Hawke's Bay. Thi Itowers are-erected piecemeal, with th< ■ exception of the topmost section, -which-, is put together on the ground and theur--lifted into position. A quaint featureof the work is the curiosity shown by swarms of magpies, which-cluster roundl the men at times with every appearance < of deep concern in the progress of.the Job. Doubtless they are attracted:by the* brightn-ess of the tools used by themen and the sparkle of polisKed!p^rce>lain- iir the insulators-..
News from the South states that the Beform Party is having difficulty in finding a candidate to 'contest the Lyttelton seat. Mr M. E. Lyons an ex-jour-nalist, who actually was elected last time but was unseated on a recount and petition, is anxious to stand again but his new position as Secretary to the Canterbury A and P Association will probably prcclure this for that body as composed of all shades of political opinion. Mr J. Me-Coombs, the sitting liabour member will stand again and Mr W. T. Lester, a former Mayor and members of the Harbour Board will carry the United Party's banner. A. E. Cooke, the AH Black is in great form. In the senior game on Sat urday against what is considered the strongest team in the competition he scored four tries. In the four championship games this season he has scored 12 tries, an average of three per match. On Saturday he electrified the crowd by scoring a brilliant try against Greytown in thirty seconds after the game -.started.
