NEWS AND NOTES

A number of local residents are to be commended for placing their cars at the disposal of the Borough Brass Band last Sunday, when they visited the Mental Hospital' at Porirua and gave the inmates a musical treat. ♦ ♦ * <•• It is gratifying to see the progress of the young men of the district, and in this connection we have to wish a successful and useful career in the ministry to Mr. J. C. McCaw, son of the Rev. Mr. McCaw of this town. Mr. McCaw, junr., has recently completed a theological course at Knox College and is about to be admitted as a probationer into the pastorate of the church.

We desire to extend our congratulations to Mr. F. Martyn Renner on his appointment to the headmastership of the new College at Rongotai. Mr. Renner is a well-known citizen of the borough and a teacher of long experience. * * ♦ We are pleased to note that the Borough Council intend taking steps to have the motor bike nuisance removed. * • ♦ Another very successful dance was held in the schoolroom by the members of St. James' Club, on Friday, October 7th, when over sixty couples were present. Greenery and streamers were the main decorations, while the music, supplied by Allen's Orchestra, left nothing to be desired. Among those present were Mesdames Hansell, Jarman, Tait, Tosswill, Welch, Mr. and Mrs. Mitchell, Mr. and Mrs. House, Mr. and Mrs. Aldous, Misses Meadows, Markman, Gray, Lees, Jollands, Tait, Welch, Davies, Wagner, Ayson, Barker, Messrs. Adams, Hill, Gordon, Bews, Walker, Lees, Jenness, Tait, Haiselden, Wright, Meadows, Radcliffe, Welch, Tates, Aldous. A week or so ago the newly-formed Hutt Valley Dramatic and Operatic Society journeyed round to Rona Bay and presented a comedy, entitled "The New Boy," in aid of the funds of the Eastbourne Fire Brigade. The Crown Theatre was packed and everyone enjoyed the entertainment. The Society, which it is hoped is filling a muchneeded want in the Hutt, is anxious to secure members who have operatic or dramatic ability and invites applications for membership. These should be addressed to the secretary. * * * On Thursday, September 22nd, the Lower Hutt Boy Scouts held a "Parents' Night" to which were invited the parents of all the scouts. The District Commissioner, Sir Alfi%ed Robin, was present. The Scouts contributed a varied programme of musical and elocutionary items which counted towards their musician's or entertainer's badges. During the

eveil|||j, the chairman ef the Committ^^briefly addressed the audience on fflg progress of the troop, while Sir ||||red held on "Epesi" ceremony or aagffission of troop officers. nn * * * A boininittee of ladies are making arrangements for a children's plain and fancy dress dance, which is to be held in St. James' Hall on November 17th. Prizes are to be donated to boys and girls for best fancy costume. A good programme is being arranged. Children are advised to purchase tickets early, and all are promised a jolly time. Proceeeds are in aid of the Ist Boy Scouts Troop Building Fund. • • * There appears to be a grave danger of an accident happening to some unfortunate motorist unless the big open space of road at the entrance to Massey Avenue is better lighted. On a recent evening the writer witnessed what might have proved a serious accident. A motorist, probably a stranger to the road, intended to continue along Ludlam Crescent from Woburn Road. Travelling at a considerable speed, his eye evidently picked up the distant lights of Massey Avenue and headed his car in that direction. Before he had time to think he was in loose metal and had run over a couple of heaps of fine gravel (which by the way should have been lighted) and very nearly capsized. The fact that there are some island gardens into which the motorist might have collided only shows how dangerous the locality is. Ludlam Crescent being in darkness at that corner makes it difficult for a motorist to quickly decide which 5 s the right road. The matter is worth the Council's attention before it is too late. ♦ • • The Committee of the Horticultural Society has decided that in future all applications for the loan of the Society's tables shall be declined. They regret having to take this action owing to the heavy expense the Society is put to in repairing damages.
