AMATEUR ATHLETICS.

(By "Olympian")

The Lower Hutt Amateur Athletic Club are looking forward to a very busy season. The passing of the Summertime Act will be of the utmost benefit to the club, as they will this season be able to hold their evening sports at an hour when more people will be able to attend. The gatherings held last season commenced at 6 p.m. and continued till 7 o'clock. This season it is the club's intention to commence at 6.30 p.m. and finish about S o'clock. In view of the early date of the New Zealand Championship, the Centre has made an early start with their meetings. These they propose to run every Saturday night throughout the season. The present season will be an important one in many ways. The Australian and New Zealand championships are to be held in Wellington during Christmas week and a team of athletes will be selected to represent New Zealand at the Olympic Games at Amsterdam. It behoves every member therefore to get down to solid training immediately. At present the club has no one who is class enough to visit Amsterdam, but it is rumoured that one prominent sprinter has his eyes on "England." Messrs. Kirkland, Matthews & Co. have generously donated a cup for competition by club members. The cup will be held by the member gaining most points at meetings held in the Hutt Valley or Wellington during the season and may be won outright by the member winning two years in succession or three times at intervals. The ground is now available for training and several members have been out exercising. Our starter has also been getting in a bit of training. He has been seen at Wainui-o-mata in the early mornings assiduously practising starting. Unfortunately for him, the starter is ineligible for the cup mentioned above. At the last meeting of the Centre, the local club was granted permission to hold an evening meeting on the 9th November. Those held last year were very enjoyable and this scribe does not intend to miss any this season. Further particulars will be furnished in the next issue of- the "Hutt News."
