FLAG WAVING.
Evidently the persons responsible for the decorations hung in honour of the opening of the children's playground on Riddiford Park have no affection for the flag of their country. It is a sad thing that the Hutt should exhibit such a lack of loyalty as >t did last Saturday, and we must blame the members of the Council who were responsible for the function for allowing a Minister of the Crown to address an assembly of children witn the Stars and Stripes floating gaily over his head. It seems futile to salute flags on Monday mornings or Friday afternoons in the schools, if, when an occasion for bunting arises, the flag of a foreign country is displayed with great prominence over the speaker while one's own emblem is invisible or in the background. This, we might say in passing, is not the first occasion on which the American flag has been given undue prominence in our civic festivities. We suspect that the flags are the remains of the visit of the American Fleet, and compliment the Council on its economy, but, we think that a few pounds invested in British flags would create a better impression than a display of foreign flags.
