A DESERVING CASE.

A meeting of those interested in the above case was held in the River Board Office on September 29. Though the attendance was not large the object for which the meeting was called was accomplished, viz., setting up a recognised executive to deal with the funds. There were present: Mr. W.

H. Smith (who presided), and Messrs. S. McGuire, D. W. Smith, C. Groome, E. J. Seagar, W. T. Watkins, and E. Rothwell. On the motion of Mr. Seagar it was decided to elect an executive committee consisting of the chairman and Mr. Eric Rothwell for the purpose of controlling the contributions received through the "Hutt News." Mr. Seagar reported that the residents in his district (Moera) were anxious to do what they could to assist Mr. Cook, who was in distress. Several small socials were being held, and on October 15th it is intended to arrange for a dance and social in the Hutt Park pavilion. The ladies were working hard to make the effort a success and had promised to provide the refreshments. It is hoped that with a few efforts of this nature augmented by subscriptions, sufficient money will be raised to purchase a knitting machine, so that Mr. Cook may have a lucrative occupation. It seems almost providential that a lady who lives in a house immediately opposite to Mr. Cook is thoroughly conversant with the manipulation of knitting machines. This good neighbour has offered to take our friend in hand and teach him the trade. Having been closely associated with this trade in the Old Country she is thoroughly competent to give the necessary instruction. The following is the amount received up to Monday morning:— £ s. d.
