NEWS AND NOTES
The purchase by the Borough Council of Mr. Grantham's property for £7,500 may be said to be a most satisfactory deal for the ratepayers who had almost despaired of getting that corner improved. By patiently waiting for an opportunity the Council has been able to save the ratepayers several thousand pounds. Laing's Road will now be widened 16ft. 6in. at the modest cost of £750. ♦ * ♦ Those interested in the Anglican Church Extension, in the White's Line district, are displaying the keenest interest in the building of the new church room. Each Saturday afternoon a number of men roll up to assist in putting up as much of the building as possible by voluntary labour. It is hoped to have the work completed by Christmas. ♦ ♦ ♦ The River Board has purchased 17 acres of land from August Bros., price £200, for river protection purposes. ♦ * * A correspondent writes:—l was pleased to read your article in the "Hutt News" under the heading of "Those Motor Bikes." It is time the attention of the authorities was called to this matter, and steps taken to stop these speed fiends. The noise and clatter in the early morning and late at night is "over the fence." They seem to have no respect for the feelings of their fellow-man or those who are sick and trying to sleep. There is one in particular that I have in mind, who between the hours of 7 and 7.30 a.m. and between 11 and midnight scorches up and down Victoria Street, at a terrific speed, making sleep impossible. I pass this hint on to the inspector, in the hope that this nuisance be stopped.
The application of the Johnsonville Golf Club, that they should receive first consideration when Gear Island is being let to sports bodies, was received by the River Board at" its last meeting. * ♦ ♦ Lovers of brass band music will have an opportunity of hearing some interesting competitions in Wellington this week-end. To-night a concert will be held in the Concert Chamber, when there will be a solo competition for boys under 18 years of age. On Saturday a quickstep competition will be held at the Athletic Park at 2.30. The bands will make their own choice of march, which will make it more interesting for-the public. Mr. G. Buckley, of Wanganui (conductor of N.Z. champion band) will be the musical judge. We wish our local band every success and hope they will be well supported by local residents. * * * The Ist Lowei* Hutt Girl Guide Company is now firmly established. It started with a few girls in 1924, and the number now is 48 strong. The flag (which was kindly presented by Mr. Wilford) was dedicated at St. James' Anglican Church recently. The usual six-monthly test for the Riddiford Cup was competed for, the winning patrol giving very satisfactory results. A short time ago the Company spent a pleasant evening with the Scouts of the Anglican Boys' Home, at St. James' Hall, and also were the guests of the Ist St. Augustine Petone Company, at Petone.
