News and Notes.
In reporting the Flower Show in our last issue we inadvertantly omitted to mention among the winners.of R.H.S. Bronze Medals, the name of Mi\. C. F. Pilcher, who was awarded a'medal for a very fine trade. exhibit. ' * '* * The official opening of the new railway line will take place at the Woburn station on Thursday, 26th, inst., at 2.30 p.m. After the ceremony has been performed by the.Right Hon, J. G. Coates (Prime Minister) the official.jparty will adjourn to the Town Hall, where they will be the guests of the Mayor and Councillors. The and Councillors of Petone have been invited to join in carrying out the ceremony. * * * This week sees another enterprise in quite a new line of business to the Hutt. The Hutt Valley Auctioneering Co. (under the management of Mr. Skip worth) have opened premises in what is commonly known as Feist's old Buildings. In addition to, carrying stocks of drapery and cfothing, this firm will be able to offer the public excellent value in both new and sceond hand furniture. Mr.' Skip- < worth, who will conduct the auction sales,- has had considerable experience not only in this branch of the business, but as stock auctioneer for one of the largest live stock agents in th ecountry. . . * * * The Main Hutt Bridge is a source of much danger to horse drawn traffic owing to the slippery decking in wet and frosty weather. We would suggest that if some fine gravel were spread- it would prevent a nasty accident.
We have pleasure in drawing the attention of our readers to a card inserted elsewhere by Mr. Keith Kitto, who, it will be remembered, was awarded second prize in the Hutt Town-Planning Competition. Mr. Kitto, who has been a resident of the Valley for the' last 15 years, is an enthusiastic member of the local tennis club, and is Honorary' Surveyor for the Hutt Athletic Club: .■'■*. * *■ , ■ • : The residents of Raroa Road are doubtless very pleased to • have their frontages so nicely cleaned up and graded, but why does the Borough Council leave the portion adjacent to the Eastern Hutt School grounds a tangle of Phenol and Gorse, at least four feet high?. Is it the Council's intention to hand this part of the street over to the School Committee for beautifying, in addition, to the area in Heke Street? * * * E. Nelson & Co., of Thames Street, have opened up in a business that will supply a long felt want in the Hutt. It is no longer necessary to travel to the City to obtain a fine assortment of s^ock for House Decoration. This enterprising firm can supply the very best in wall papers, oils, colours, paints, glass, etc. As the overhead expenses are maintained at a minimum, purchasers will reap the benefit and prove our contention that: "It pays to do your business in the Hutt." *. * * A further conference is being arranged between the local Council and all local bodies asked to contribute to the proposed New Hutt Bridge. The question to be decided is the percentage to be contributed by the Respective bodies. Failing an agreement being arrived at the question at issue will be finally settled by a comihission. * * * We understand it was the intention of the Borough Council to ask the ratepayers at an early date to sanction the raising of several loans for Borough improvements. It is unfortunate that the raising of the Bank rate may make it necessary to postpone the undertaking.
