AROUND THE SHOPS
By "Observer"
A glance at the shop windows in Main Street reveals the fact that "window-dressing" plays a much more prominent part than it used to do. Formerly it was the custom of the housewife to go to the "city" to purchase requirements and view the displays. Not so now. Our business men realise that if their slogan: "Shop in Lower Hutt," is to have a real dynamic force, they not only have to stock "the goods" in order to satisfy customers, but have also to display them artistically in order to attract would-be buyers. And right royally are they succeeding. For instance:— Shearer's are featuring in two windows latest styles in ladies' winter coats, fur collars and trimmings predominating. Eight shades are noticed, and are reasonably priced at from 54/6 to 8 guineas. Stylish rain coats in several shades are also seen. A. E. Thomas, the keen-priced White's Line Grocer, announces that, in order to cope with the ever-increas- , ing demands of the district, he is enlarging his premises. Here will be found all requirements for the housewife—the prices and quality are right and service prompt. Really smart felts, velour and velvet hats are to be seen at Little's. These are in a variety of shades and a style to suit everyone—and all reasonably priced.
The Hutt Cabinet Co. are showing in one of their windows a "masterpiece" in the shape of a silver ash bedroom suite. Prospective home furnishers would be well advised to see this choice suite. In the other window is seen a ne fidisplay of Axminster and reversible rugs in rich colourings and designs. Little's are showing in one window a choice and varied array of plain and fancy dress 'materials in all the latest seasonal colourings. The opposite window reveals "comfy" winter coats, trimmed with fur collars and cuffs— and they are really smart and stylish. Edmeades & Macaskill, the Hutt Hardware Specialists, are showing a wide range of British made tools. Here can be seen tools for both the "handy-man" and tradesman. A "tool for every job" is their motto, and at prices that cannot be equalled in the city. Frank Thomas, the Draper (opp. Bank of N.Z.) has many choice lines in ladies' hosiery, gloves and underwear. This department is controlled by Mrs. Thomas, and buyers receive her personal attention. Why "carry those heavy grocery parcels," when E. C. Russell & Co. deliver daily to your home ? They claim that their "Chestnut B_utter" is equal to any other brand on the market. Here also you can ge the famous Sutton's seeds —'guaranteed to grow, and true to name. In the showroom (upstairs) Shearer's are showing the latest models in ladies' and children's millinery in various styles and tones. Expert milliners are also in attendance for clients preferring to have them made-to-order. Kennington, the "men's outfitter" has a fine display of men's ware that should suit the most fastidious. Here are all the latest styles in overcoats— smart and dressy. A fine range of warm rugs, scarves and underwear — just the kind to "keep out the cold." Russell & Co.'s Cash Grocery Store announces increased sales of their "Silver Urn" tea, owing to the great interest taken in the competition. Try their tea and become a competitor. G. F. Brand announces a clearing sale of curtain materials, nets, silks, etc., at greatly reduced prices, in order to make room for new stocks arriving. To those contemplating furnishing, an early inspection is desirable.
J. E. Cairns is showing a fine range of bedding and blankets for the winter nights — all reasonably priced. Nearby are seen cosy eiderdowns in glorious colourings and designs. Pretty curtain nets to beautify the horn care also here. Friis & Shaw are showing a most unique display. Here can be seen a rich and varied collection of ornaments, marble clocks, and Dolly Varden clock sets. Prices have been greatly reduced on all these lines, and they are well worth inspection. The opening of the new Hutt Railway on Thursday, May 26th, will be a " redletter "' day in the history of the Hutt. You, of course, will be going to this most important function—everybody will be there ! If so, you will see the Pioneer Grocery Store at the corner of White's Line and Ludlam Crescent. Step in and ask for the New Price List, and you will find that at A. E. Thomas' White's Line Cash Store you get quality goods and service that are unsurpassed.
