"MOTOR PARKING IN FRONT OF SHOPS"
Deal* Sir, —I had much pleasure in reading the "Hutt News," and hope that from such a beginning it will progress on until we have a daily issue, as good as the city papers. I note, however, a letter on "Motor Parking in the Main Street," which if what he advocates is carried into effect would have a bad effect on the business people in the Hutt. If motorists v.-ere prevented from parking more than five or ten minutes, how much business could they transact in that time, when some of the shopkeepers take that long (on a busy day or night) to serve one article. A number of motorists live some distance out, and come to the Hutt shops to spend money. If they are prevented from parking the necessary time to do their shopping, do you think they will not do any shopping or will go on to Petone or Wellington? Don't you think it folly to ask the people of the Valley to "shop in the Lower Hutt," but don't dare to leave your car in the street while doing so. It appears to me when the Main Street is lined with cars the shops are busy, when there are no cars there is no business. "Main Street" should realise this instead of trying to force customers away. Personally, I like to shop in the Hutt, and as it generally takes about one hour to spend the usual £2 on Friday night, would pass by the Hutt shops,
if our only means of transport is refused waiting room. No doubt many others would do the same, and "Main Road" would be able to display his goods so that people on the other side of the road could see them, in fact have a good deal more time on his hands to go over there himself to admire the unbroken display of goods, but not so many buyers.—l am, etc.,'
