The Chronicle LEVIN. SATURDAY. JANUARY 6, 1917. CLOSER SETTLEMENT FOR LEVIN AND DISTRICT.
| A movement is afoot in Levin to pro j mote a petition to the Land I'urchaS' C'osiMiiissionoivs to have an area of lain on the we twaul .side of the Horowlie | nun Lake acquired -by the Government !"tr closer settlement pu;rpc»es 'i lie j:r: pr;s:'.l is an excenieut one, fo the land on the fuii'ther «ide of Pli lake is nf fair average quality ;■ ml ye i.s value-! at a much lower figure tlia: the average in this district is se iNuu at. Six years ago there wer (M'ttler.s eu.'livating land on the fill I tJier fido or the lake, and raising pr-c li:<tli!e crips of 'potatoes and otheii ■ v.'<£ta':kv, lirtt difficulties of trawpor I and -uuli disabilities have prevent© any extension .of settlement in tlios parts up to the pres-ent. We understand that on , of the Land Purchase Gommissione] j who w«-s in Levin last month had tli . hike lands pointed out to liini, an J that he was favoura'dv 'impressed wit i the detail given h.im by a p-rominei , local settler. If the business peop! . of Levin prove alive to the true ii t-ercsls of the town and district an t themselves, the petition for ae-:piir i nient of the land will he pushed alor i immediately; it i.s only by persistei
promotion of closer settlements that a continuance of substantial progress can be assured for those patrts, for the total area of our lands is insufficient to guarantee material advancement in the years immediately ahead unless a larger population and increased pvoductivity be secured. Tho Levin borough council well might take tho initative. •'AVE WOIS'DER WHY!" Two week ago in a. Pndmcirston Xorth •paper which circulates about a dozen copies in Leviii, there appeared an advertisement (from the Public Trustee of Xew Zealand) calling 011 creditors in the estate of the hit tSergt..Major Davidson whose late place of residence in New Zealand was at .Levin, (during the last two years of liis stay) to send in amy claims they had against deceased's estate. Two weeks ago we wrote to the Public Trustee asking for authority to reprint, the advertisement in Levin's local newspaper. So far we have not received oven tho courtesy of n reply. In last Wednesday's Otaki Mai!, wlhjieh circulates in Levin as few ■eupieis ns The Chronicle does in Otaki, the Public Ti'uslee pab'jLihes »an advertisement calling 011 "all creditors in tho estate of Ivli/.a Ami -Birch, married woman," to send in claims against her (-.state. Xi;- copy of th-is advertisement hat been -ent to The Chronicle, though ii is i-lio only newspapeir published in Leviii. Once again, we wonder whiy?
