Amongst, tho employees of a a back-block station was a young fellow who claimed to> be a returned soldier, and lie told with no little pride and bravado hair-raising accounts of hi.? experiences at Gallipoli, and also with tho Flying Corps. geant. however, put a different complexion on • the situation, and when quietly approached about joining the forces the "soldier" explained that- it was no use enlisting as he had • been "turned down." Questioned as to bi> pass, however, he said he Tiad lost it. He was quite sure it was no use trying again. Xext day the actual position had been realized b.v the recruiting officer who found the young follow bad evidently thought bettor of tho matter and had decided to "give it a go." He left for town next day, passed tho doctor with flying colours and was off to< camp by the following day's steamer, much to the satisfaction of |the station hands, who were greatly amused over the whole affair.—Herald.

A Press Association message from Cliristchureli s:iys that yesterday nftivnoMi a f'urilier information charging 'Robert Semple with having uttered seditious language was sworn by Inspector Dwycr. The language alleged to be seditions was used by Semple in Victoria Square on Sunday afternoon last. The information is like the charges already laid against Semple, and comes under the recently issued War Regulations.

A Perth cable says that the State's fish supply scheme has failed and is fltosintj. The capital invested was Ii.'GOOO. and the losses in two years wore £7000. The Inspector of Fisheries, in his report, gives as the principal causes of failure the unsuitable steamers and the fact that the fish cannot be trusted to bite within the regular hours allotted to State employees.
At the Lake Domain Board last meeting on the recommendation of i deputation urging that steps taken to clean the Holcio stream from accumulated vegetation in order to facilitate the drainage of the adjoining properties, it was resolved to make a visit of inspection :uhl yesterday Messrs Robertson, Fosella. iDcmp. sey. Gardener, I'uki, .T. Broughton, and Hanita, members of the board, accompanied by Messrs Murray and Malcolm, representing the council, and Mr J. Ryder, a bolder of property near the lake, paid the visit as arranged. After careful examination of the conditions of the creek from the late Mr H. McDonald's house to the lake and at the boatslied it was decided to bold a meeting on Fridayi next and discuss the best ways and means of making a satisfactory arrangement for both parties. I
At yesterday's conference of dolegates for the formation of a county fund the mayor read a. letter from Mr B. R. Gardener which stated that he (Mr Gardener) could not see bis way clear to accept the position of organizer for the fund.
