A serious accident to one of the outgoing coaches was liarron-ly averted at Otira last Thursday, t-he Kuniara. Times. A house was being moved, and the floor placcd oil a dray. Approaching a coach the latter stopped to let the awkward load pa sis. lut when near the coach the floor fell t.fl the dray on to the road. The noise and cloud of dust raised starthd the horses of the coach. They swerved round and attempted to "scale a timber heap, and it appeared as if the coach would capsize, but the pole broke, saving the situation. A couple ot horses were severely staked on the timber. Passengers and luggage Ave re afterwards transferred to another coach.
It is reported from Australia that the Australian soldiers' vote in the recent 'referendum on conscription Avas as follows: Against 102,000; for 4-1,000.
Sergeant Mat Bevan. of Manakan. returned home laist Friday. He was all; through the Gallipoli campaign and took part in the campaign in F ranee, being Avounded in the back at Armentieies. The bullet lodged close to the spine and has not been removed. Sergeant Bevan is still ci diuv and expects to return to the front- in a short while.
It is report-eel that Oliver, the wellknoAvn horseman, has deposited £250 Avith the military authorities Avhich entitles him to join the Flying Corps.
The ballot for the 25th Reinforcements was completed last evening. About three thousand names were drawn. The lists will not be announced for some days pending a careful scrutiny ot all names. Doig. of Levin, who volunteered for active service some twelve months ago, but was then rejected as unfit, recently was drawn in the ballot. He went before the Medical Board at Palmerston Xtorth on Tuesday evening, and was passed as fit. Mr Doig will go into camp on 2nd February.
A slight earthquake shock was felt in Levin at about 10 o'clock last evening and another at 12.-1.5 today.
In Friday's Chronicle it was reported that in the case of J. C. Millies v. J. 1). Howell judgment was entered for plaintiff for £16 16s .lid. This was a correct report, hpt Mr Howell i-.skis us to add that the amount claimed wn.s £2<3 13s lid. and that Mr Howell's counter-claim was thrown out on the ground that it was not filed in time, and that it was afterwards s -ttlod out of Court.
