. 'STEADY, LEVIN!' (Otaki Mail). Our sister town, Levin, is fortunate in possessing a number of live, pushing, enterprising men who have done much for tfreir town by the exercise of their energies and capabilities. Unfortunately, some these gentlemen occasionally allow their zeal to outrun t-lieiv sense of justice and fairness—they are apt to look on I.evin a« "the hub of the universe" and "the only pebble on the beach," and so- become totally oblivious to the fact that there are other places in the Dominion —not so important as Levin, of course —which they might condescend to give some little consideration. An example of this little failing is furn-
ifihed in the following paraajrapH (which we clip from an issue of the Levin Chronicle:—"ln the middle of (January next it is proposed to inakV special effort to 'boost' tho County Patriotic Fund. iMr B. R. Gardener, town clerk, of Levin, has been asked to undertake the work, and to> facile { ( tato his endeavours the. Borough I Council has given him leave of a'tn j isence- from his office when accessary, j during the middle of the month." | Dfow, let us state a few facts. In ; the. first- place is no County Patriotic Fund in existence as yet. A project, < emanating from Levin, has bc ell fav- . ourably considered in centres of t the district, and the proposal will as- j suredly become nn established fai't. The first meeting of the delegates will be held' 011 the 13th inst. That being «!i, the public will want, to know who/ decided tlint n special effort will he held next January ; and who nppo'nt- ' ed Mr -Gnrdener to nndnrt'ike the ' ■work? Tt is understood thnt each c (centre of the whole district is ,to hnvet 1 an equal fay in the management of 1 the organization, when formed, and 1 who can say l but that a totalv differ- 1 ent line of notion might be decided upon by the assembled delegates; or ' that some other gentleman—with all t due respect to Mr Gardener, who has ' special qualifications for the work— might be chosen as organizer? We firmly believe that the time is ripe (for the- District PatrioticFund. and that the Fund will meet with the whole-souled support of the entire county, if properly administered ; but if the whole business is tol be "cut and dried" in this fashion, public will be prejudiced against the 1 Fund before it is established. Xow, < Levin, apply the brakes and go slow- * ly! (Comments on the complaints ' above reprinted are made in to- ' day's leading! article.—Editor, ( Chronicle.) 1 ~ I (
