The " Kamerad" Trick.
« — GERMANS PLAYED IT ON CEASAR Nearly 2000 years ago Julius Caesar fought the Germans in Gaul. After bent'.ng them in France he drove the i survivors across tho Rhine, which he crossed by means of a bidge built l\v his engineers in ten diays. In this campaign he was opposed to the Usipitcs and Teuchteri, forefathers of the Westphalians and Alsatians. They fought with that absence of sportsmanship which distinguished them to-day. Lii his Gaelic war comment;! ries, the great Roman general relates how "the barbarians sent an embassy to him with proposals for an armistice which was granted. They probably came with thiier hands up, shouting the Teuchteris and primitive equivalent for "Kamerad!" As, under cover of this armistice, the Consul was making as excursion with a few hundred men, 0000 of these attacked; him. Next day they sent another embassy to apologise. The slave-raids in France seem also to have 'a 2000 year-old precedent. In the first book of the Gallic wars Caesar feel I s how Ariovistus, the then Kaiser. attacked the Aedui and Franche Cofte. Having conquered the unfortunate French tifbues, ho compelled them to give him their children as hostages. i Kultur does not seem to have altered very much. It evidently take* more than 2000 years to make a silk purse from a sows ear.
