LEVIN'S "PAINT-UP AND ULEANUP" ASSOCIATION All things considered. Levin is to be congratulated upon the decision of certain of her citizens to' forni a C'ie:in-up and 'Pfii'iu-tip Association for advancement of the best interests of Levin Horough. Any public institution ''may" bo made a nuisance or a farce, accorduig to the measure of coniinonsen.se or nonsense that preponderates in its counsels. We believe that Levin's latest body can do good work and helpful ilor this town and district. Should any member of the association wax over-zea v ous,the tirtimvunity as. a whole may be relied upon, to exert a proper measure of repression; and, on the obverse side, if any la?rge section -of the community proves inimical to the general interests through disinclination to observe a proper degree- of civic right-mindcdiness, the association must be looked to for remedial action. l.n every community there "is" a section that is remiss in its duty to the community in general, and a not-inconsiderable section that is prepared at all times to let ill alone as well as letting well alone. To mij that Levin :s "the cleanest town on the coast' is to 're-echo the opinions that every town on the coast InlJs
r.boiit itself; and, meantime, there are dirty back yards and shriek l :g public a.id private buildings in every one of tlicm. Wellington City was accounted the cleanest place in LVew Zea.iud until ll'OO, when the plague km came a'ong and' shco'k the self-con'ktence of tlio city council until it gathered some th-.ie thousand loads 'of garbage ii'd 11,83-1 genii'-laden rats from the lioums .• •; offices and outbuildings of tiio city pi .per. Tluve -is nc o'ague-m-.hv to-day, but why should the vomniunitiu7 wa.ij ft../ .such an undesiv-a-event? Let ihe cleaning up be done ii advance. If the talk of clcani ■iup 'Levin Irightens away any prosI'.fl'Vk settler. Levin can allor.i 1«. lei him go; such a fearsome person weil could be spared. "With our parks and gardens and ornamental streets we have a good many features to commend out town to all who visit it, and if we ' acquire a 'reputation for keeping the place clean in ita less publ.c aspects nothing but good can result to the town and the community.
