LOCAL & GENERAL

Two rinks of Palnierston bowlers are to visit Levin to-morrow afternoon, and play games against representatives of Levin Bowling Club.

Mr, "\Y. H. 1 ield, M.P.j has been in communication with the PostmasterGeneral on the subject of establishing telephone sub-exchanges at various centres along the Manawatu line which at present do not possess this convenience. In writing Mr. Field recently, the Aoting-JPcstmaster-General stated that the department was receiving applications for exchanges at Manakau and Waijkanae, and that when the applications were received they would be duly considered with the intention of doing the department's best to comply with Mr. Field's wishes. The Minister further states that telephone extension at the present time is very much a question of cost even although lit might be expected to- pay fairly well, and: if there were any extensive work 'involving large expenditure on material, for the present it would hardly come within the range of practical consideration. He further adds that so far as he is concerned there is nothing to prevent the carrying out of works in contemplation if the anticipated returns from them are likely to prove

remunerative. Ennea Hodoi, which has been indentified as the place where our troops have just crossed the Struma, was the scene of one of the most pathetic yet fascinating tragedies in classical mythology. When Demoplioon. having left -Phyllis for Athens, failed to keep his promise to return, she journeyed to this point nine times to wateli for his conning, and when all her watch-ing-proved vain, she either hanged or drowned/ herself, or, as the more merciful legend runs, was turned by a pitying god into an almond tree which was called phvlln ever after. To preserve her memory and her sad story j the place of this disaster was called Ennea Hodoi, that lis to say, nine jour-, ueys. Jhe girls of the Olinu school are working hard at present making articles of all sorts calculated! to catch the eye of surplus shillings and Sixpences which are plentiful in these days of golden butter-fat and costly meat. They intend to hold a bazaar in about a month for the purpose of raising money for patriotic purposes and with this end in view they held a meeting lately to arrange details. Miss Ivy Olsen was elected secretary and the whole of the girls present formed an offensive and defensive alliance with the object of hectoring or dragooning or perhaps viragoing their friends, parents and neighbours into a sense of their duties and respondiibl-i----ities towards our fighting men. They graciously allowed the boys to participate in this campaign; stnictly on the condition that none of them were eligible for military service. They applied to the school committee for tlie use of the school and grounds with, of course, the school committee thrown in. The latter consented only reserving their own right to be treatedi according to the usages of civilized warfare. Hav|ing settled the preliminaries the meeting, being very fresh, appointed sub-committes to take charge of stalls and attack various organizations without any formal declaration of war, for tlie purpose of getting booty .'en the shape of hangings (not of a judicial nature) and other decorations. The assistance of the teachers was taken for granted. Considering the thorough manner in which these youthful agitators have gone to work there is no doubt that they will succeed in their oibject and make tlijis year's effort much more successful even than last year's.

America's estintated Cotton crop is 11,8000.000 bales, or 1,200,000 bales less than last season. On the publication of these figures prices at the Liverpool cotton market jumped to the highest figure since 1-873. The short yield can hardly fail to be very unfavourable to Lancashire.

The question of whether wounded soldiers quartered in the workhouse hospital should hold concerts and play games 'n the workhouse chapel was raisedi at a recent meeting of the Carnarvon Guardians at Bangor. The clerk mentioned that the men had been promised a billiard table. A Member: "Billiards in a chapel!" Captain Hughes: "Why not; the chapel only consists of bnicks and mortar. There is nothing religions about the building until there are religious people inside of it. It is possible to be religious over billiards. Let us not be narrowminded and exercise common sense." Mr Jones: "What about tlie language of the soldi!er who loses his game b'lliards?" (Laughter.)

The management of Farlandi's pictures is keeping well abreast of affairs in all that pertains to the business, and "especially in securing within a few weeks of their being shown in

Wellington, the great outstanding "star" pictures. it is only a few wes'ks since Cabiria was show.ii here, and this week (Friday and Saturday) "Britain Prepared," a film of 10,000 feet 'in length will be screened. Reading gives to many but a vague idea of the efforts that Great Britain has made, and is making in the present struggle. Ammunition factories covering thousands of acres have been erected, in England, aeroplanes, submarines a.nd warships have been built in numbers never before approached, the work going on night and day. Only such a picture as "Britain Prepared" can give an adequate idea of the immensity of the task.

One of the most useful and profitable discoveries during the war has been made by a youthful Irish chemist named Alexander C-orr. He lias discovered a new a.niline dye which is being successfully exploited by the British Government. His reward from a grateful country is £050 a quarter—£26oo a- year. He is a' minor 'and most of the money is being invested for his benefit.

Speaking in London the other day, the Bishop of London said he was often asked why lie should have £10, 000 a year. All he could say was that of that sum the Government, took over £5000 in rates and taxes, and with tile balance he had two large houses to maintain. - The result was that after being Bishop of London ten years he was to-day a poorer man by £2000.

In a letter dated Sept. 18tli, to a friend in Palmea-stoHi [Xorth, Nurse Curtis makes a reference to the deatli of IDt. A. A. Martial. "They took liim straight to the theatre. The bullet or piece went through the right side of his face near the nose, through his mouth, and lodged. I tlnink, in the neck. They did not take that out, but plugged"the hole. He also had a wound n the right arm just on or near the elbow, and the intestine was pureed in five places. When he was brought back from the operating theatre I was brought with him. Colonel Mc-Gavin came, and we drid some artificial respiration. One of the nurses never left him for a second; but in no time his 'breathing gradually went again. 'He never regained consciousness from the anaesthetic, and thank Heaven for that, or lie would have suffered."
