The Chronicle LEVIN: MONDAY. NOVEMBER 13, 1916. A CARNIVAL WEEK.
Tlit- continued success recorded in Chri-stohurch for tlfe annual carnival weik ot' CVitorbiiry Province suggests to lie the possibility of soiiieiiiing on ! ii smaller sea.le b'i:>g j-j;t ft!;•_>'>le in Levin. The mat tor was considered in this tow;i. three voars ago. when the 1 aium.il eoirpotitions we:e 'ii progress. and a tacit agreement was eonto to that : the propi sod carnival week for Levin : would i>e kep in t.'e I'oreiroiit. ►Si;!".' ■ then, the great war lia.< overshadowed our empire, ami 10/ a! affairs have he.-'i , disorganized t very •* here. Vet there is 110 good reason f>:r allowing local niatj tei.s t'o he'.'oine >t •.. ''a' t. To male j mei"y in :ueh tidies of trou'de :.s : as those now upon n« is difficult, and; i to some niind.s un-eein'y. Vol the'; e is another side to tho position that should eon-iderod ; and that is the l>rf.K : l>i! : (y i,l' ,i settled aspect of lugubriousuess being allowed to cast a permanent pall over the communitf-'e.s. Such an aspect towards everyday life is regrettable; it is like'y to disseminate an a.ir of hoj)ol<v-siloss that eveatutjllv might !?€' an effective deory" to'va 1 '. 1 ; liamye" ing the dominion in its endeavours- to assist in full measure in the duty that devolves upon every part of the Briti-'i Empire. The war goes on and hy pr- sent ap icaran -e.s there will 1)0 at least another twelve months of
fighting; maybe two or three years of it. Ihe best way to help—-for those, unable to participate in active scnleo— is for each one to so run his business, and his pr'.vate affairs also, that no detriment will he otc.i.sioncd to the interests of lil.s fellows nor to the coni--111 '.nit,,- at a whole. The restriction of needless expenditure is a sound principle of economy, but it' of expenditure be carru j to exorbitant lengths a strangling disability is put upon the business people of the towns and upon various classes of wage-earn-ers. The aftermath o! this will b.i ■seen in a stagnation ol the whole current of' commercial and social activity. To our mind; there is 110 sufficient reason for cessation cf the ordinaly aniusement.-s and social amenities of -the peopl.", and it :s in full self-confidence-of our s<>un-dno.s< in this opinion that we suggest that the present time is not inoppertune 'for a revival of the three-year-old proposition for a carnival week to be held in Levin. Possibly it conld be arranged for show week in January next: or as an alternative, an endeavour could be made to hold the 'Horowhenua Racing Club's annual meeting, the A. & P. Association's sliow (not next Jaunaiy's) and a Patrotic Society's combined carnival and competitions some time-: : n the summer of 1918.
