HOROWHENUA COUNTY COUNCIL

*—: On Saturday the Florow henna County Council held its usual monthly meeting in the borough chambers. The chairman (Mr G. Monk) presided and there were present Councillors G. X. Stephenson. l'\ W. Venn. F. Ryder, . Freeman, S. A. Broadbelt. J. Keband G. P. Catley. The protest of Mabin and Hume in reference to the proposed; replacement of a bride on the mai : n road at Makernay by concrete pipes was referred to the councillors for the riding and the engineer. L. E. Duckworth's complaint 'regarding the water races running through her property along the Arapappae road was left to the engineer to attend to. Howard Andrew's cla:m for a refund of rates alleged to hare been overpaid was left to' the chairman ami clerk for ■investigation. In respect to the communication received from the Poplar 'Filaxmililing Company the following resolution was passed: "This council not being satisfied that the Manawatn river is a navigable river to the Poplar estate, it requests Mr Ross to bring expert evidence to show that the river 5(5 a na v igable wn terway.'' The engineer's report as read was adopted.

RANGER'S REPORT. The ranger V report said there was not much to refer to on this occasion as the roads been thrown open, and sonic had taken full advantage of this: they wore not satisfied with ten hours a day. 'but wanted the whole twentyfour hours, and some of them took it, but wlill be dealt with later on. He pointed! out that the hours the roads are open, viz., 7 a.m. to 4 p.m., did not give him much chance a,s the main county road required a lot oi' attention as the stock stray on to the main road and when caught the owners plead ignorance. There is now no imblsb pound at Otaki (the old one having been .sold) so that stock has to be <1 riven from that district to Waikanae or Manakau. ' Lnfit month eleven owners of wandering stock were fined 10s each and, casts and oue fined £2 and costs and another was convicted and discharged. Nuisances still existed on "Wallace and Pott's road. The report was adopted.
