LEVIN BOROUGH COUNCIL

Councillors M. Fosella, E. M. Herrick, J. Harvey, S. Jones, J. Robertson and A. Dempsey, with the mayor (Mr C. Blenkliorn presiding) constituted last night's meeting of the Levin Borough Council. Councillor -France w.-s granted leave of absence. STREETS COMMITTEE'S REPORT. The committee recommended that the application of Messrs Harvey and Co. for the laying of a street tram line across the right of way at the back of the borough leasehold property in Ox-ford-street, be granted, subject only to the pleasure of the council, and also that the work be done to the satisfaction of the borough overseer. That a new bicycle be obtained for the use of the road overseer, the (same to be the property of the counoi'l; cost £14. That the borough overseer, Mr Chan. nings, be paid the sum of 4s per day extra for the period he worked laying the concrete in connection with the work at Dalgety and Co's saleyards. In reference to the last recommendation the mayor said lie had no obpection to the amount (suggested being paid, but he thought it would: establish a bad precedent. Councillor Dempsety explained that the overseer had a lot of extra work to do in connection with the concreting at the saleyards, and had to spend a lot of extra time doing it and keeping hiis own work ahead. An excellent job had been made of the concreting. The recommendations were agreed: to. FINANCE AMD LIGHTING COMMITTEE'S REPORT. These committees reported; that they had no recommendation to make regarding the suggested removal of the lamp standards in Oxford street, and that Mr Burrell make further enquiries regarding the most satisfactory system to adopt to replace the present lamps on the present standards, 'and' to improve the lighting if possible. Also that he report on the question of minimising the pressure used in the lighting and extinguishing of the lights. The report was adoptedi. GAS MANAGER'S REPORT. The following report was submitted by the gas manager for the month ending 26 th October :— During the month matters connected wjfth the department show 4>hafc about the usual amount of business is being done, such as gas-fitting, maintenance. etc. The gas holder has been thoroughly overhauled, cleaned and painted with a good paint adapted for iron work and the same 'is now quite equal to new. The carbonizing plant is keeping in good ordier, and the sales of coke and tar are about the usual. All surplus stocks of ooke are now marketed, and our regular oustome'rs keep it cleared away as soon as manufactured. The report was adopted. ■ROAID OVERSEER'S REPORT. The work ifn connection with the concreting at the saleyards is now completed and I fell sure will give satisfaction. The details as to cost hare already been submitted to the streets committee. As instructed by the council I have diverted the water races from the properties of Messrs Remington and Hall, and placed the new culvert across Wer-an-oa road. I took advantage of the holiday last Friday and tarred and sanded the .footpath from the post office to the Arcadia. On account of tlie small amount of traffic during the day mentioned, the work was most satisfactory.

Should the weather permit- I intend to get on with the tar and sanding of the sides of Oxford-street, as instructed. The other work carried on has been general maintenance, attention to water races, etc. I would suggest that now the contractor is making the new road in the KaTviu block that' arrangements be made with him to lower 'the same portion of the cutting on the Kawiu block. I think that an inspection by the streets committee should he arranged and. the contractor—.Mr Douglas—be interviewed as to the cost of the work. The report was adouted.
