Levin's Effort
IX AID OF CHRISTMAS GIFTS FOR OUR. BOYS'.
As the cause was a popular one, there was little or no difficulty in raising the £25 guaranteed by Levin towards "Our Boys' Christmas Pudding Fund." Mrs. J. P. Luke, mayoress of Wellington, visited 'Levin and explained matters to a meeting of ladies, and after the meeting Mrs. W. M. Clark and Mrs. Sidney Hall undertook the task of seeing the effort to a successful conclusion. They organised a "gift afternoon,, which proved in every way a success; lad'ies from all parts of the district responded to the call, and over 138 donations were promised or received, comprising money, eatables, fancy»vorl>, livestock, etc. 3 etc. Tlie "gift afternoon" was spent in competitions. The hidden scents com. peti'tibn was won .by Mrs Lindsay McDonald. The Christmas cake competition was won. by Miss Eva MdLeavey, who kindly handed it back for further competition or sale. The Red Cross committee- kindly gave the .use of the Red Cross -Store for the sale of nil the donations in produce, jams, cake, pickles, meat, poultry, fancywork, etc., contributed at the "gift afternoon."
On Saturday, Mesdames. Clark and Hall 'started the business at 9.30 a.m., and worked right on till 8.30 p.m., when they had made a clear sale of everything. Mrs. Goldsmith kindly gave her nsistance, and took charge of the Christmas cake competition. Mrs. Tveedwell gave a. helping hand at the •ounter. At the conclusion of the day, counting money donations, result of competitions, and general sales, tlio total amount of £30 4s was. netted. To be added to this is a donation of £12 from the Foxton Concert party, the proceeds of an auction of a Christmas pudding, making a grand total of £42 4s. After paying the promised £25 for Christmas gifts for the boys at the front, the balance of £17 will be devoted 1 to the fund for supplying Christmas dinners to the boys in camp in New Zealand. Mrs. Clark and Mrs. Hall wish to thank heartily all those who so willingly responded, without which no success could have resulted. The profit list is not yet complete ; there are several other donations to come in, one being a sheep given by Mrs. Campbell, of Oliau. An acknowledgment of all further amounts derived from such sources will be prin. ted in due course. Following is a list of donors' names, which includes all amounts of money and kind. (It la asked that in any case of omission the donor overlooked' will please notify the lady organizers)
