For the Red Cross
LAST NIGHT'S SUCCESSFUL COMCERT. A measure of success hardly expocml by the most sanguine attended the combined concert and picture show given in the Icoal theatre last night. 'J he people began to file into the building shortly after 7 o'clock and before 8 o'clock the seating accommodation was all taken, and. rare thing in Levin, the sale of tickets had to be stopped, though many more crowded in and stood at the back. The musical portion of the program was appreciated especially a quartette song by Messrs AVeller and -Eastman and Mesdames Gapper and 'Matthews, and the singers had to repeat their performance. Mis Harkness also had to appear again for her playing of a mandoline solo. Other items encored were Mr Eastman's song, Master Strong's recitation, and "Please give me a penny, sir," sung by a bevy of school girls. During the singing of this last a flag collection wae taken up for the Red Cross, and it resulted in a sum of £8 5s being gathered. The amount included five gifts of one pound each given by Jhing Jjee, Messrs F. Davies, A. Reeve, H AValker and the mayor of Levin. The remaining items on the program were contributed by: The schoolboys, so' l g; brass instrument duet, Masters Scha are and Harris; Playing at Parliament, the schoolgirls; cornet solo, Master Schaare; song. Mr. Motterßhead; cornet solo, Mr Burton; song, Mr Weller. Farland's orchestra played the accompaniments. The third part of the program comprised an interesting set of views of life in the Sahara, and a humorous picture. I" rom a financial point of view the effort should prove to bo among the best held in Levin. A sum of £7 was taken at the doors; £8 os was collected in the hall; while the collections made by the children were: May White £2 Is lOd, Doris Lane £1 10s 10d ; V Johnson £2 3s 4d; D. Watson, £1 ; Rita Farland and V. Yuille, £2 10s 3d' May fonder £1 11 8 Dd; Yuille and ignall £1 18s. In addition to this there are the proceeds from the Bale of 'tickets and the sale of the song Plea6e Give Me a Penny, Sir," yet to come to hand. The expenses are expected to total about £4.
in a brief speech the mayor, on behalf of the organizers thanked the performers for their assistance, Air J. W. 1' arland for the uee of tiro theatre, Major Burlinson for the boys' band;, Harvey and Co. for the stage furniture and Mr McFarlane for carting.
