The Chronicle MOW ZEALAND'S POPULATION, LEVIN. THURSDAY, OCTOBER 19, 1916 LOCAL & GENERAL

I'lie estimated population ol tlu- dominion (;i« at June lOlfj) was 1.094,239. 'Jhis is the first time in New Zealand's rwent history wherein a decreaso on previous estimate has been recorded in respect of population. 'I'lie 10'io estimate fur March last was 1,01)9.39-1. Inclusive of 49,844 Maoris and 12,508 residents of Cuok and other Pacific Islands, tlio population of New Zealand in June last was set down at 1,1;j6,681. The unsatisfactory nature of the figures for the period to June last, doubtless is accounted for by the outgoing of thousands of the younger and best of our male popluatiun to fight the battles of the empire. The emigration figures show that from this and other causes there was an excess of 11-15 immigrants over emigrants for the eight months to Juno, 1910. but it should be borne in mind that liome-coming soldiers are not classed as immigrants; so the loss by outgoings is not actually as the official figures make it appear at first glance. Another cause <of the diminished immigration is the almost total cessation of the granting of assisted passages to suitable emigrants from London. Only 288 such passengers reached New Zealand in the eight months to June, 1916, whereas 84-1 arrived in the corresponding period of 1915, 13,318 during the whole of 1915, and 20,025 in 1914. The excess of the departures over the arrivals therein during the month of September. 1916. was 101 persons ns against an excess over departures amounting to 369 in the corresponding month of 1915. ,
