The fact that tl\e Allies are surpassing the Germans iin the constriictio.il of artillery is indicated by tlie despatch from Essen stating that skilled workmen are being recalled from the trenches to reinforce the factory hands. Two thousand additional workers are being added; this week to the normal force of 7000 employed at Krupps works at Essen. Hindonburg is directing the employment of these extra artillery makers, the suggestion being he feels the. pressing need of more big guns, which Germany hitherto lias been unable to supply.
ESSEN'S PROTECTION. A correspondent says the anti-air-erafit guns have bean dismounted afc Essen because the dense smoke ascending from the factories forms a cloud over the Rhine and Rulil rivers, making it impossible for tho airmen to distinguish Essen from the surrounding towns. Much resentment is sluwiiv at the supply of American munitions to the Allies. Director von Bodenhausen ,in control at Essen works, declared that if the United States would not ship ammunition to Europe the war would end. SERIOUS CHARGE AGAINST A SHIPPING REPORTER. Ivan Levy, s'viv,)!':;; reporter fur the New Zealand Times, was charged at the Magistrate's Court to-dav with communicating to Thomas Harry Chudley information as to the strength of His Majesty's naval forces contrary to the War Regulations Act. Chudley, Marine Superintendent for the Shaw, •Savill Company, gave evidence that Levy read to him audi Mr Bevan a letter giving a description of Great Britain's naval armaments. Some of the information was afterwards published in the newspapers. The hearing is proceeding.
