« Tho ordinary monthly meeting of the above council was held in the borough (liamhers on Saturday. The chairman (Councillor G. A. Monk) presided and other councillors present included Messrs G. X. Stephen-son, F. AY. Venn, F. Ryder, H. Freeman. S. A. Boadbelt. J. Kebbell, and G. P. Catley. Leave of absence was granted to Councillor Better. Messrs Collingwood and Smith, of the Heights, waited on the council and requested that it give powers for the raising of a loan of £500 for the purchase of land, purveying and fencing for the extension of the Heights road. The council agreedi to take the necessary steps to raise the loan. A deputation, consisting of Messrs Griffiths, Enimett, and P-roston-Thonias asked the council to give the settlers in the vicinity of the Baliui road permission to transfer from the Otaki riding to the To Horo riding and to give them half the rates collected (£152) and allow them to maintain tho road which at present was in a bad state of repair. Tin; engineer said that £50 a year would maintain the road. The. chairman and the engineer wore appointed to meet the deputation and inspect the road on Thursday next. Fogdeu's request for repairs to the old cemetery road, Otaki, tho engineer was instructed to get- the surfacemen to attend to tho road. It was decided that the councillors for the riding, tho engineer audi Councillor Ryder meet fci. »Sperring on the spot in connection with the Pahiko drains. Councillor Broadibelt moved and Councillor Kebbell seconded that the Levin Dairy Company be granted permission to occupy the portion of the unused road near their creamery at Ihakara during the pleasure of the council. The motion was carried. Toa Bansfield's request to shift hie fence at Manakau to the edge of the road was granted. -The council agreed to approach the Miniiste* of Lands to ascertain if he

will consent to an exchange of part of the road line in Section 39, Block X., Kaitawa S.D., in favour of a lino much easier to construct. — McKenzie, of Te Horo, waited on the council and objected to the council undertaking to pay half the coat of the overhead bridge to be erected by Major Addington at Te Horo. He stated that 'Major Addington had agreed with him to build the bridge, and 1 it was not the business of tho council. If he was included in tho special .rating district there would be trouble. The chairman said the council would use the bridge later in connection with tho road extension, and the majority of ratepayers signed! the position. The matter was held over for further consideration. The ranger's report stated that several prosecutions for allowing stock to wander were pending. The driving fees were: Tokomaru riding lis; Wirokino riding. 7s; Otaki, 8s; Te Horo Bs. The report was adopted. The council agreed with the proposal of the Botorua Chamber of Commerce to ask the Government to employ prison labor in the maintenance of the public roads. Waitomo council's resolution urging the Government to abandon the voluntary system of recruiting was received. It was deckM to again demand the royalty on tho metal taken 'by the Poplar Flaxmills from the county metal pit.
