Councillor Kebbell sadd on Saturday that tho County Council had found contracting for maintenance of roads had proved unsatiisactory, and the council had abandoned! it. It of tens happens that letters to the County Council arrive on the morning of the meeting and sometimes while the meeting is in progress. This gives councillors and officers little chance to give due consideration to the matters thus brought under its notice. The council objected to this at its meeting to-day and several letters that came to hand by the late mail, and one from Messrs Loughnan and Jacobs, were held over till next meeting;. The chairman said they had a. resolution in the minute book dealing with the matter, and it was not necessary to further advertise as suggested by Councillor Kebbell. The county ranger has been instructed bv the county council not to impound off all district roads in tho county on and after October 21st between the hours of 7 a.m. and o p.m. "I am not going there again! The last time I went they (the settlers) rousted on me after all the trouble we took to smooth matters over," said Councillor Catley at the county council meeting to-day. H'e bon'tinued that one settler had taken the part of the man whom the council had compelled to clean his drains, which in their uncleaned; state were a nuisance to tliem. A figure in county finance was placed in front of a deputation by the chairman of the council to-day. He told them that the amount of revenue collected by the county was about £13,000. Of this sum £3300 went in levies made by the Wellington Hospital and Charitable Aid Board; another £1000 went in salaries and office expenses. etc., so that about one-third of their revenue went before the council could spend anything on county works. The new Otaki Town Boardi is reviving the question of lighting the township by means of electricty, and at a meeting held last night it was decided to ask Mr T. Bastin, C.E., of Palmerston North, to report' on the possibilities of harnessing the TVaitohu river as a source of supply. The chairman of the county council at its meeting to-day informed a deputation (of whose coming he had received no notice) that it was the rule of the council not to receive deputations without being advised beforehand, otherwise they would not bo able to arrange the business of the council, and wouldi be unable to get
