LEVIN BOROUGH COUNCIL

Members of Levin Borough Council met in the borough chambers last evening it being the occasion of the council's ordinary meeting. The mayor (Mr O. Blenkborn) presided ami C'oun-cilloiv-i present were: .Messrs M. Jfoselln, E. M. Her rick, J. Harvey, S. Jones, J. Robertson, A. Deinpsey and H. B. France. Regarding the application of Messrs Remington and Hall for the removal of "the water ii;rces from their properties in ■Hatlt street, Councillor Deinpsey said/ the applicant were agreeable to p.u,v .£1 towards tillo cost of the work, , 'litl hi- moved that the work be carried' out. Also it wonM be well if tlio present culvert across Weraroa road was removed and a larger one put in; tlie present one was too smafll, and when there war? a heavy flood the water went over the roadi and flooded adjoining property, and washed metal off t'lie l'oad. The cost would lie about £3. At present there was a large volnmo of water flowing down the Hntil-street water txiflile. ConiUMililor Herrick seconded the motion that the work he earned out, and it was agreed to. ROAD OVERfITEHR'S REPORT. The read: overseer .submitted tlie .following leport: The work for the month has been of :i general eharacted with the exception of the kerbing and channelling in front of the property belonging to T)r Davicfi and others, in Oxford-street, which was finished at a. total cost of .£l3 12s fid, the cost per chimin being £1 12s Gd. Tlie tarring and sanding of 'the portion of Queenstreet running from the Levin Hotel to Cliamberlain-street has been completed. I have made a> start with t'Tio concreting of the snlevards as instructor! bv the council and given fine weather will have the same completed thiis month. . W. Af. Fin.lay.son has completed his contract in. connection

w.ith the removal of trees on Section 2 Block XVIII, Cambridge-street, maul as soon as possible I will have the section ploughed and the stones picked out. Everything 111 connection with the waterworks is working satisfactorily with the exception of the meter at the Boys' Tnaiimng Farm, whioh- is again leaking. I am arranging to have a rubber ring manufactured to fit the cylinder, and trust then to end the continual trouble. The report was adopted. GAS MANAGER'S REPORT, Following was the report submitted to the council by the malinger of the municipal gasworks for the month ending September 26th There is little to report outside the general routine of duties connected with the department. (Several new connections have been made, two new cookers fixed, and the average time devoted to general maintenance. Owing to removals several houses wiitli si: gas supply are temporarily cut off. However, on the whole, our output of gas shows an incerase of about 20.000 cubic feet in excess of the snine period of last. year. The carbonising plant is keeping j n good working order, and will require no expenditure in the near future. Of course the renewal of our retort bench must be kept, steadily in view, ,'>fi there always is a chance of the "old retorts giving out unexpectedly, although at present- they are doing good work. I find that it will be twelve months on the 18th inst, since Mr Blacknian was empowered by the council to order these retorts and other ..iccesseriefi. but so far we have had . no word concerning same. I hope that ( some information concerning these will t soo come to bad; T have written to , Mr Blackmail recently, hut to date ( hive had; no reply. I may state that , , all gas goods: fittings, mantles, globes. , etc., are still obtainable although prices j generally are rather higher. Our coke < is about all marketed, or rather our re- | serve stocks are gone. Tar is also en- , quired fer- but this we require for our ] own lord demands: for streets, etc.

Councillor T)cinp«ey thought the gas m".linger should retain the tar produced at gas works until the requirements of the road overseer were satisfied. Tlie mayor thought the council could; use all the tar produced. He moved that until further notice no tar be sold to any person outside the borough in quantities exceeding one barrel. This was agreed to, and the gas manager's report adopted).
